History of the non-Western World. Grade 10 for me. I learned the communists were bad. I didnt beleive it though because they liked rock-n-roll and Levi's.
When did your schools teach you about George III and the American revolution?
Is your point that Americans have no sense of World history?

Schools in the United States usually require a full year of World History in high school (usually in the early part of high school...like your limey A-Levels, or something like that). I took a full year of World History and a full year of U.S. History. I didn't learn a single thing in either class. It wasn't until I began reading more lit. that I got interested in history simply to gain context. This is how I teach my students both lit. and history now...I'm sly.

Have any of the other Americans out there ever been to England. If you have did you notice that 80% of the population look the same. That is because of hundreds of years of dipping into the same gene pool

They did'nt specifcally. The American Revolution is more important to you guys than it was too us. You have to remeber that at the time there were many things happening. So we don't, that I know of at least, have a specific course about the American Revolution, because basically it is an insigificantly small part of US History. We tend to concentrate on the fact that George was mad, rather than what he did in the US.

I have no idea, I am not American.
But, anyway, on a somewhat related note, I once heard that in Germany, when they teach about WW2, the holocaust is not mentioned. I can see why, but find it distressing should it be true.

The only real difference between those who enforce these rules and the 'freelance tax collectors' with balaclavas and flick knives is that members of the second group are more honest. They don't tell you that you're being mugged 'for the good of society.'

I don't believe that is true. They have very strict laws about holocaust denial.

Denial is one thing, omitting to tell the full story another.

The school I attended focused on Ameican civics for one year and then offered several different classes in World history or the choice to go deeper into US history. I am talking about High school, not college. The civics class was required to graduate as was one year of US history. The other two years were elective depending on your interests and choice of study. (You could ignore the elective history classes if your interests of study leaned more towards science or math for example)

my high school history class dealt mainly with european and world events, as canadian history is a railroad and a revolt in manitoba. oh, and women's sufferage.

British schools are pretty difficult to compare here - as schooling is optional after aged 16 (90% go on to further Ed).
Also subject study is limited after 16 to a maximum of 4 optional specialist topics (5 if you're REALLY brave - or you can do vocational based studies).
But briefly - History education is as follows:
Primary Schooling: Castles, Kings and such! (pre 1700's or around that) European as well as British.
Secondary schooling (12-14): same as above
G.C.S.E schooling (14-16): 1830 - present in British and European
AS/A2Level (16-18 - optional): Choices of early modern 1450-1650 or 1830 to present(include European and Russian)
Also if you choose to study Politics at AS/A2 level you get a 50/50 look at American and European politics.

There is a big flap in Japan right now because of some textbooks that don't mention some of the atrocities committed by the Japanese in WWII, including the sexual enslavement of women and forced labor of men. This is in the same vein of denial versus telling the whole story.
I am murky on the details, but I think there are a few different books that schools can use to teach from and this is but one (new) option. I think the main teacher's unions have rejected it though and refused to use it.
As for American History, we I don't remember the specifics of what I was taught in High School. I remember more world history than American. US history is mostly the Revolution, the Civil War, the Westward expansion, then a decade by decade tromp through the last century.
I found that Zinn's People's History of the United States to be a fascinating read. I encourage everyone to pick up a copy and read it for just a few minutes. I bet you'll want to finish it.

They aren't exactly steadfast - there are many variations from our education system .... too many to write down.
And pedantic is fine, I excel in anal retentiveness so I'm sure we'll get on a treat!

Agreed. That wasn't even covered in geography I don't think - pretty poor really. I only learned about it through A-Level film studies, of all subjects.

I took a year of World History. My teacher couldn't get off the Roman Empire. Constantinople this, constantinople that...
I remember one of my buddies asking a question. She told him that he didn't want to know the answer. I asked a question and she assigned me a research project on the subject.
Of course, she was hugely pregnant at the time, so maybe it was hormonal rather than incompetence.

Actually a friend of mine was talking to some German girls who moved here. They said that they weren't taught about the holocaust, but that its slowly being integrated into the textbooks and such. They have lots of rules in Germany about what you can say about it and such, like you can't wear a swastika. Understandably, its a very touch subject
There was a world history course at my high school but it was an option to take. I did take it, but my teacher spent most of the time gossiping about the principal. Ah well.

Columbus is a god he never killed Native Americans when he landed at Plymouth Rock. Oh and all asian americans on the west coast during WWII were spys.
