Post WIT

people expressed interest in a tech support forum, and so was born Whore Institute of Technology, and so died Area69 (sorry DRDRAM).

basically any questions you have about computer, hardware, programming, networking, web design or whatever post em here, or help someone else out. HTML is disabled so you can post your html code examples and the tags will show up fine (<test><h1><head> ).

Disclaimer: im not responsible for any bad advice given here causing damage to your system. (if garycoleman tells you to type format c: dont listen to him)

O.K. Here's one.....

When I go to the chat room, The Applet thing pops up. It will not let me go into chat room if I select no. When I push yes, it lets me in. Then when I'm in the chat room, after I've been thete a few minites, the thing freezes up off 'n on when I type in replies, and below I keep getting a message tha says "applet initialized" and "done" back and forth thru the whole time I'm there. Why does it do this? (btw, months ago, the server.exe file was hit with an unfixable virus & got deleted. Would that cause it?)

well, the thing that pops up is probably a security alert asking you to grant permissions to JPilot and it is required for the applet to run. It probably says 'high risk' or something like that but it is not (not here anyway). I know in netscape you can choose to always grant those permissions to JPilot and you wont see that message anymore, im not sure about IE though.

As far as the problems youre having with it running, it is buggy but ill check into it.

Yes, I do have the option to click the box to never see it again, but I haven't tried that option yet. I just get tired of being in the chat room & not being able to write replies because the writing field freezes up all the time on me - whole conversations go by while I try to type something, waiting for it to unfreeze. I'll try the 'never see again option' to see what happens. Also, I didn't mention - when I push 'no' for the applet, it says it can't find chat, & I can't get into the chat room unless I reboot the 'puter.

A general note on this subject:

When asking questions, fellow whores, please include as much salient information as possible. e.g., Billgerat should have included which OS and browser he is running.

As far as your problem is concerned billgerat, I suspect that there may be a light incompatability problem. Get the latest version of IE or Netscape and see if that works. As dingle says, click the don't show this again option so the Jpilot software will automatically install, and see if this fixes your problem.

Another solution is to get a proper chat system installed. Most of us here favour mirc as our client software. Click on the link to have a look. To connect to us, you'll need to know that you have to add a new server in the setup options and add us as : server: irc.mindasylum.net.

Hope this helps.

By clicking Jpilot always permit box solved all problems. The obvious solution is usually the one most overlooked or ignored as in this case. Thanx for time & help, & I'll remember OS & browser info next time.

Thanks to everyone who has expressed their wishes to help out here. Certainly, this forum will be much smaller, but used in the right way it could become a excellent depository of knowledge. We have both people with eons of computer experience and people with never-ending problems here. Should make for a fruitful combination.

I'm sure there is no need to say it, but I shall, just for posterity: in cases of a critical nature (where (s)he could easily put a system or program beyond repair with the wrong action) no one will give advice which they don't know to be 100% accurate and true. The last thing we want is someone coming back with tales of how we fucked up their systems. Many thanks...
