How do I link sound files to a post in the forum so they play when the topic is opened?

its working on the stileproject, go look at the 100 post thread. just change the web provider info and file name.

i'd also liek to say that embedding sound in web pages is really not very nice for us on low bandwidth

Agreed. It's common courtsey here to hint at large sizes in the topic you make. If there are lots of large images or sound files, stick a little {dialup beware!} or something in the topic text.
