IRC info
I'm opening this thread to post pertinent info about our IRC network, starting with aminal's post from yesterday about IRC services. (I'd prefer you start a new thread if you have an IRC-related problem for the forum.)
Nickserv
Nickserv is there to protect your nick from being used or abused by other users.
to register your nick type:
/msg nickserv register yourpass youremail
if you connect from a different host mask or IP address then nickserv will tell you to identify yourself.
/msg nickserv identify yourpass
You can protect others from using your nickname, by registering it. if someone does use your username, you can type
/msg nickserv recover yournick yourpass
this will change their name to something like Guest849032. You will then have to get nickserv to release your nickname
/msg nickserv release yournick yourpass
You can then change your nick to your proper one
/nick yournick
Nickserv also serves another purpose: it makes it possible for you to be recognized and automatically opped in other channels as well. Once you've been added to the auto-op list in a channel, as long as you have identified yourself to nickserv before you enter the channel, you will be opped.
Chanserv
Chanserv is a service dedicated to supporting your channels. it protects them from take overs, ops you when you first join etc.
On joining a channel that does not exist, or is not registered, you become the op in that room. You can now register the channel:
/msg chanserv register #yourchan yourpass yourdescription
You are now the owner of this channel, and will automagically be opped once you enter the room (you must be in the channel as an op to register it). If you want other people to also be automagically be opped on joining the room you can set up SOPs and AOPs, super-ops, and auto-ops. The SOPs are able to do more stuff than the ops, and should only be your closest friends. the aops are the people who get ops automatically on joining.
OPs are there to protect the channel - if anyone is spamming, using foul language, etc. they have a number of things they can do. Kick that user. A kick is normally a warning to start behaving. They can ban that user, and then kick them, a ban can go on for a period of time - so like sin-banning them for 30 seconds. Or they can permanantly ban them. If these measures do not work, then one of the ops on the channel will probably go to get help from one of the IRCops (operators of the whole IRC network) or SERVERops (who operate one of the servers on the network.)
I digress... chanserv is used to help your channel, op and deop the people who should and should not be moderating the channels. This is a feature that can also be done by bots. And, if necessary, mindasylum runs a botserv where you can have you own bot on the server, read the help files. /msg botserv help
There is another service - memoserv, which can be used to leave messages for your friends when they are not around. Again, read the help files. /msg memoserv help
