Post Free Internet?

I've been thinking of getting a new ISP because mine is for crap. Disconnects, taking forever, and generally just pissing me off. Are the free internet services worth bothering with? Are there any that are ad free? Any suggestions?

Also, is there such a thing as a modem speed-up program that actually works? I've tried a few and they all seem to blow goats.

In the UK most ISP's are free with no advertising. They usually sit on the backbone of the subscription ones so they are quite reliable.

As for a modem booster. I would'nt bother, not in windows anyway. The fatsest and best modems are external real modem, not internal software winmodems. Buy a USR and you will be alright

It must be something your tax dollars take care of, because in the states, they're all advertisement driven. That's why it's free.

I got to looking around on the subject only to find out that I'd end up having to pay for the free internet connection in another way. Every time that I hooked up to one of these free servers it would count as a local call and it would cost a dime. Those dimes can add up in a hurry, (just look at your regular phone bill for a example.)

Thanks for the external modem advice. I'm going to have to look into it. I wonder why internal modems suck so much in comparison?

Because most of them are software driven. Basically they are half a modem. They have a few bits on them and then the driver in Windows emulates the actuion of the main board you have on an external. This means they use the CPU to work, and if they are really shit they can grind the machine to virtual stop.

Check in modems in the CP and tell me what the name of the modem and I might be able to give you something to tweak it in the short term.

Free ISP over here also charge by the minute for the local call. It sucks, although I have unmetered now

The internal modem I have is a HSP56 AUDIOMODEM RISER. I've heard from others that it is a piece of junk and I kinda believe them. If you know of any tweaks I'd love to hear them.

Opus-- I have a mtu program called Easymtu. It seemed to help a bit at first but now the thing acts like it always has.

Spooky-- I found a odd name at a site. Are you the SpOOk there? http://www.camborg.com/camgallery.htm

The site is for pics taking with a b/w wrist camera. The pics themselves are here http://www.camborg.com/spook/gallerytemplate.htm
I wouldn't bother asking but one of the pics is of a famous english bridge so it made me wonder about it.

I use a 56k modem, and if you want to speed it up get a freeware mtu program from cnet or somewhere like that.Just search for mtu when you get there.

It basically justs changes your packet size in the registry. It made a huge difference in my ping time on game servers.

&F&K4N0S37=14S34=21 - This is for V90

&F&K4N0S37=13S34=12 - This for K56 Flex

Yes it is a pice of junk. And aminal is right get a USR or an external Rockwell

Thanks for the advice but one more little question if you don't mind. Am I supposed to put those numbers in the Advanced Connection Settings under Extra Settings? Please excuse my ignorance but I'm not too sure about this exactly.

This was a test. Didn't work. Be back later to try again. (I'm trying to post a sound wave.)

I tried out those numbers and they worked like a charm: for about two hours. I was getting a speed averaging about 115,000. Now when I try to use it, it won't let me connect at all.
