why does my computer suck?

I've been having problems with this computer since I bought the damn thing. First my hard drive got screwed, so I got a replacement under warranty. They told me that I could either have a tech come out, but the tech would format my old one so I couldn't save any information from it to transfer to the new one, OR I could install it myself.

So I installed it myself and it ran wicked slow. I don't know why, I must have done something wrong. Anyway, I can't run any games because of that, and all the mp3s i play sound like shit. So I call up the company, and they tell me that since I installed it myself, I broke the warranty, so I couldn't get someone to replace it now. That's total bullshit, because they TOLD me I could install it myself and never said a thing about the warranty.
So lately I've just been wondering what I've done wrong, and what I could do to fix it. Formatting and reinstalling wouldn't help because I tried that already. What could be wrong?

They could have replaced it with an ATA16 drive. Yeah.

How big is it?

What company is it from (comuter and HD)?

Have you ever installed computer hardware before?

How much RAM do you have?

What OS are you running?

How old is the computer?

How did you break it?

Do you kick it when it's "acting up?"

Did you masturbate to it?

Did you film or take pictures?

Check which IDE channel it's on (should be either Primary or Secondary Master, likely Primary), and make sure UltraDMA33 (or 66 if you are so fortunate) is enabled. If you don't know how to do these things, post back here and someone will help ya.

Oh try defragging it, too.

Listen to Freelance.

Look on the back of the drive. There will be a series of little switches, ones that flick up and down. Look in the manual which should have come with the drive.

You'll need to match the configuration which coresponds to <b>Primary Master</b>.

When you're booting up, the BIOS screen should tell you what it's set to at the moment. Look for it detecting your floppy, hard drive and CD-ROM.

do you mean like a jumper Pangloss? do they use switches now instead of jumpers?

well, if you have a jumper make sure thats in the right spot too, youre drive docs should tell you where that is.

Yep. Those too. Some have jumpers. There are three prongs over which a cap fits to cover two of them -- make sure you're covering the correct two. Some also now have little toggle switches. Make sure you have those too. I think if it's a normal IDE drive under 20-30GB, it will probably have jumpers.

Please note that me and hardware don't mix. So I will leave all the lovely switches, jumpers etc to the like of Memdink, Pangloss et al.
