Question Tube Amp Emulator?

I've been wondering if there is such a thing as a program that will alow you to plug a guitar into a computer and emulate the sound of a old tube amp. The reason I ask is that I'd like to hook up a 1954 Gibson ES175D, hollowbody electric sunburst with dual pickups, to my puter. I don't have a amp and for years have had to use a simple stereo connection to play it. I'd still have to run it from the puter to the stereo but I'd at least like to get a old sound from it, like it is supposed to have.
Is there anything like this or do I dare to dream too much?

I dont know if this will work cause I have never tryed it but I have been told that you could possably find a midi sequencer that would have a line in for a guitar then attach the sequencer to your pc. And as for the sound have you tryed cake walk pro 9 it might do what you want.

Thanks guys for the suggestions but no go. I about fell over when I saw this, RETAIL PRICE $429.00. on the Cakewalk site. To use that program I'd have to find a certain something that we aren't allowed to mention here.
It's too bad I don't have a Mac, I found a freeware VTS program that with the right plugin would do it.

Spooky, I did however find some useful things on the page you linked, thanks again.

If anyone can find something that would work, (hopefully really cheap or preferably freeware) I'd appreciate it.
