"Not enough free memory to run the program."

Okay, my computer has 128 MB of RAM, plus a fairly large chunk (min. of 256 MB, max of upwards of 4 GB) of virtual memory, and Windows ME is constantly giving me "Not enough free memory" errors.

What's going on?

Check your VM settings.

If the PC is 'intelligently' managing them, configure it yourself.

Min = RAM size

Max = Boot partition

I decided to install a 64 MB chip, and it seems to be working. I have the virtual memory set up so that I manage it.

Windows is shit for memory management. o what Goatboy said. On a happier note my machine is running Mozilla 0.8, Usenet client, Mail client, IRC, ICQ and playing an MP3 and the cpu is 94.3% idle.

Reinstall.

I haven't played with ME and I'm I know nothing of ZoneAlarm, but your OS should not be operating like that.

I know it sucks for games, but run NT4W SP5.

Good solid platform, dual boot for a gaming OS.

I'll probably be doing that myself today.

Your minimum VM is too high.

Bring it down to 128Mb, your PC is caching to pagefile.sys continually to make up the 128 Mb shortfall in min VM : RAM.

The free resources reported is deceptive. Windows(like Linux) will try cache as much data into free memory as it can. So the 47% still used might just be windows cacheing various data on your machine.

Having said that, Windows is utterly useless at releasing the memory when something needs it. I'd takes Goat's advice and re-install, but put Win98 on instead. Most of it's bugs have been accounted for, and it retains compatibility with games, et al.

hmmm im using winME and i have icq, irc, AIM, getright, winamp, and ie open and im 94% idle
(well cpuidle doesn't count does it?)

192 RAM and 46% resources are free

odd

Feel free to back your shit up before trying this.
Make sure you have nothing in you "Start up" folder. (Back it up and put things back later.)
Disable virtual memory.
Whilst Rebooting hold down the F8 key after the initial memory count screen and choose Safe Mode from the list.

Run defrag.

Go back to virtual memory and select "I want to manage virtual memory."
Typically a good value is twice your physical RAM. Set this value as a minimum and a maximum. Now you got yourself a permanently defraged and reserved swapfile.

Also make sure that you set the machines typical role as "Network Server".

I'll give that a try. MemMax is hella cool. Before I used the optimize function I had 1% free physical memory, but after I ran it once I had 45% free. Hella cool.

I prefer RamBooster for that purpose.

Whatever you do, don't use MemTurbo though.
