Post Hard Disk noise ratings:

Hey people:

Anyone have experience with a new hard drive being louder or quieter than their old one? I am upgrading to a new drive and was just interested if people had any info on this. The drives I am looking at are rated 3.6 and 3.1 bels, whatever that is. I don't know what my current drive spins at, but it makes noise I can hear. Nothing bad, but audible.

The only time I ever hear my drive spin is when it first spins when I turn the power on.

The only sound that I can hear is my fan. If my hard drive is making a noise, it's being hidden by the sound of the fan which is not too loud.

he doesn't have a fan and the hard drive sits right under his monitor (hint, hint).

you will hear it, but it's nothing like a fan. just turn up your speakers.

also, if you're trying to watch a dvd, you can spin down the HD.

New hard drives generally are quieter than old(er) ones. The ratings you're speaking of (3.6 & 3.1 bels) I think refer to recordable noise level whilst in operation, and I don't think they have anything to do with the speed at which the disk spins (those tend to be rated in rpm, usually either 5400 or 7200 for multimedia drives).

Hope this helps.

whenever i turn the computer on, the fan on the power supply makes a drilling noise like a pigeon flying into a jet engine. you have to hit it a few times or stick a pencil in it to make it stop.

that usually disconnects one of the CD drives.

the hard drive works perfectly though.
