Post *kicks linux*

yes, i know there's a WIT forum(mods please leave this here for an hour or two before you move it on me), but I want everyone to see this and I know not everyone checks WIT.

I got linux mandrake 8.0 yesterday. It came on 7 cds.
I have no fucking clue what Im doing. It installed(kinda.. with errors) and refuses to connect to the internet(says the modem is busy... bullshit).
I need a nice, experienced volunteer to let me call them or to call me and coach me through a reinstall step by step.
Im lost.
I have NO FUCKING CLUE WHAT IM DOING.

Note: It may not be tonight that I make the call. It depends on whether or not MB and brad force me to go out with them.

A list of the errors would be nice? Did it detect your modem? Are you using KPPP in KDE? IS your modem and internal one?

Need info honey before I can help.

Okay, is the modem an internal modem? If it is, odds are you have something called a winmodem. A winmodem is a controller-less modem, or software modem. You might be able to find a driver for it at http://www.linmodems.org , but odds are you won't be able to. The drivers for winmodems aren't open source, so drivers for winmodems are being built from the ground up. Odds are, you'll need to buy an external modem (those are NEVER winmodems to my knowledge).

When in doubt, RTFM (Read The Fine Manual). You know that big thick INSTALL GUIDE MANUAL that came with it? That explains to you, STEP BY STEP, how to install Mandrake 8.0. It goes through partitioning and everything.

If all else fails, e-mail me any questions you have with detailed descriptions of what it is you need to know. If you absolutely need to be talked through it step-by-step over the phone, I'll be more than glad to give you my phone number (I can't make long-distance calls at the moment) and I'll help you through.

BTW, it also helps to have tons of documentation on your computer on hand. The monitor manual is a GOOD piece of literature to have when you try and configure the X Window system.

Sounds to me like you need to reroute the tertiary entrance modulator and quazzle-duplex the Linux manually through the KKAP-port. If all else fails spill some coffee on the keyboard. I heard beer is a viable alternative.

karen, the modem you have now will not work with Linux. Linux does not like winmodems. You have two choices:

Go back to windows
Get a hardware modem (i.e controller based)

I tried to get a winmodem working with Linux
once and had no luck. Save yourself the
headache and go buy a decent modem.

how much would that run me? and thanks btw.
also, Im tired of the unsolicited comments about people who dont know how to use it should fuck off and die rather than try.
Thats such bullshit.
Everything Ive learned about computers I taught MYSELF. Through experience... through making mistakes and learning from them, etc.
Thats the best way for me to learn things. I jump in, I do what I know, I ask questions, I fuck things up, I ask more questions. Eventually I learn it. Thats just how it is.
The elitists can suck me.
And I VERY MUCH appreciate the help from people who have given it. Its nice that there are a few who dont cop elitist attitudes when I asked questions.
Thanks guys
*goes to buy linux for dummies*

Oh hush, it's the nature of the forum and you know it damned well.

It's cool that you've taught yourself so much about computers. I admire that.

karen, I have a Zoom 56K Dual Mode PCI modem that I used for like 2 weeks while I was waiting for my RoadRunner hookup. It will work fine under Linux. I paid like 80 bucks for it. I will sell it to you for $20. You can't touch a decent hardware driven modem for under $60. Unfortunately, I know too much about modems, and the Zoom is a great modem. With subpar phone lines I connected consistently at 49.3 bps. Seeing as though the FCC regulates connections to 53.3, it's not too shabby. In plain English, this is a good modem for compensating for bad phone lines and/or distance from your local switching station. It will perform, even using the crappiest ISP. Drop me an e-mail if you are interested.
