A few points on this.

  • Putin was the head of the KGB and kept himself alive in that post for his entire tenure. He may be as mad as a brush but I don't doubt that he is smarter than the average bear
  • I doubt he wants to get us back to a cold war situation. The Russian's edge has been lost. Since the fall of the old communism, the economy has collapsed to such an extent that they could not afford another cold war.
  • Rather, they are going to try to pick off the weaker nations. Quite frankly, I'm amazed that they haven't put any serious pressure on the Middle East and Korea/Indonesia. These are the people whom Russia would do very well to swallow and assimilate. I don't mean geographically, I mean politically and economically.
  • The real reason for the sinking of the Kursk is not, and probably never will be, in the public domain. The most accurate unofficial reports say that they were test-firing a new breed of hydrogen-peroxide torpedo and it detonated just as it was leaving the torpedo shaft. Who knows? If that is correct, it shows the state of affairs there. The British/American forces abandoned that particular technology in the late 70's. Why? Incredibly unstable. Doh!

Thumbs down He'd be funny, if he weren't leading such a huge country.

According to a Reuters story:

quote:
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday he felt guilt and responsibility over the Kursk submarine tragedy and pledged that those responsible for the deaths of 118 sailors would be punished, if they were found.

Does anyone else find it odd that he declares himself responsible for the tragedy, and then vows to punish those responsible? Maybe he's foreshadowing some sort of public suicide, or something? We should be so lucky.

Have I mentioned before that I hate that fucking government?

Putin scares the hell out of me. He only speaks about punishment and military. He wants to up there nuclear arsenal and get more weaponry. You'd think as a civilization we have risen beyond that. Obviously we have not, its just frightening that such a large, well armed, and poor country is trying to shoot for the goals that they are. Its so touchy it can only lead to bad things.

I honestly think he intends to attempt to revive the Cold War, because that was Russia's economic heyday. And I don't mean that what he's doing may ultimately revive the Cold War. I mean that I think he is, quite consciously and intentionally, attempting to bring the Cold War back.

Who the fuck thought it would be a good idea to pretend that the US has a non-assassination policy? I know a USMC sniper who'd be glad take a few days worth of vacation over there.
