Post Ok, I need a DnB afficionado here...

Shadow will probably be of help, I am guessing...

I hate to bring "genres" back up, but I was wondering if I could get a little clairification on the different sub-genres related to Jungle and Drum N Bass...

Thanks

Shit, ya had to ask post-clubbin' (I'm quite drunk atm)...

What are ya lookin for? Basic rundown of subgenres (imo).. here goes:

Techstep/Hardstep: Dieselboy, Renegade Hardware label, Bad Company, most Moving Shadow stuff, Metalheadz stuff, most Jungle Sky stuff, F-111/Higher Education (DJ DB & friends) stuff. (The bulk of DnB you hear in the States will fall under this category)

Jazzy: Roni Size/Reprazent, Krust, Breakbeat Era, Squarepusher (when he's rippin' off Miles Davis), Yellow Note (Jungle Sky), and associated ppl.

Jump-up: Aphrodite, mostly (his NWA remixes are primo). Recommendations along this line would be appreciated, as he's about all the jump-up I've heard.

Experimental: Aphex Twin, Squarepusher (when he has an original thought (Come On My Selector is F'k'n genius, video by Chris Cunningham, find it at Warp's site somewhere, maybe this will work(zipped realvideo file))), Photek in his finer moments, µ-ziq, Amon Tobin/Cujo (NinjaTune/N-Tone).

It's far easier to classify an artist than it is to define a subgenre. If there's somebody you've heard you want to hear more like, name some names. 'Course, I could be just babbling like a fool at this point. It's all about the techstep around Denver, DJ-wise, tho (which gets a little old, recommendations appreciated, you Brits ought to have some good tips).

(edit: amazing how I catch typos up to a day later and realize I should have probably done more than named shit for descriptions. look 'em up, you'll get a better feel for some of the styles, i suppose)

Addendum:

Sci-fi, Darkside, usually considered sub-sub-genres of techstep. Fairly self explanatory, evil, nasty, fast, heavy shit. Deep wobbly synth basslines. My favorite, but then I'm an old goth, after all.

Ambient DnB: Hehe. This just doesn't make much sense to me. I mean, ambient, ok, mellow, usually beatless stuff, fine. Drum and Bass, tho, wouldn't be much without a beat, would it? If anybody can better explain this li'l contradiction, be my guest!

That was fine for me, I just hear terms like tech/hard, dark, sci-fi, and the like tossed around too much.

Confuses my fragile little mind!
Thanks

Agreed. I find the question "does it kick ass, or not?" to be much more relevant. Describe any given artist, one could invent a unique subgenre for them. Subgenres are the darkest circle of hell, populated mostly by music critics. It's a sign of either a) deep love of music and total immersion therein or b) yet another example of my hypocracy and wankership, that I actally pay attention to this kind of crap. Lester Bangs still kicked all ass, such as critics go, though (right up there with HST for magazine writers)
I'm a lifeless tard, yes, I know.

Look me up on ICQ or Nap one day, though, we ought to trade some files.

Im all about it, but as far as Napster goes, I have to re-download it... as well as all my files. But it is no big deal, most of what I had was either Deiselboy, ak1200, Aphrodite, etc...

Just give me a little time to manage my files and expand my hard drive from a measely 4 gigs...
(it doesn't like ICQ very much right now )

One very similar way to look at it was when jungle stopped relying so heavily on large samples or whole songs, it became Drum & Bass.

So the early reggae stuff which really kicked of the scene in the UK was definitley jungle (after all the Jungle is the nick name for a part of Kingston Jamaica, and the Junglists are the people from there)but when orchistration and original music came in it became drum and bass, see Goldie and LTJ

That just one perspective from someone who was there at the birth but is a little out of touch now.

Massive respect goes to Shadow for not using the term 'Intelligent Drum and Base' which i find highly insulting.

Nice little historical tidbit, there. Thanx. M'self, I was into early hardcore and 1st-wave rave back in the early 90's but kinda dropped out of the scene around '93-'94. When I came back, DnB was fully-formed and on its way, so it's nice to get some more background on what went on around that time...

"Intelligent" DnB... what a pile of crap. As opposed to what? Stupid DnB?!

Exactly, it was a snobby term by those who wanted differentiate from the harder more 'black' jungle.
