Question new radiohead- what do you think?

hrm. i've listened to almost the whole thing now. but i'm not a big radiohead fan. my SO is, so i'm going to review it from his perspective, using his comments:

it's perty good. it's not the radiohead from Ok Computer, or anything from the past for that matter. but that may appeal to those of you who didn't like the way they sounded on the previous cd's. this is like elevator music, peaceful nine inch nails...

buy it.

what do you think?

Thumbs up

So far, I like it.

Perfect for a snowy, lonely night like this (it's snowing here, anyway). I've always kinda thought of Radiohead as an artier Smiths. This is reinforcing that idea. Maybe it's just the mandolin/strings bit on track 4, which reminds me alot of "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want"...

Since I'm a broke-ass who just paid rent, I've assembed a copy off Napster for now, but I do beleive I'm gonna have to pick up the CD.

you have to buy the cd. it has some kick ass artwork inside. and bonus! if you lift out the plastic thingy inside that holds the cd, there's another booklet underneath! woohoo!

seriously, it's nice.

I liked it, I heard a while back, I would'nt buy it, but I can bare it. Its not as good as the early stuff, or some of the other stuff coming out of the UK and Ireland at the moment.

I haven't heard too much of it yet.

although, I have heard that it's better than their old stuff (if you prefer electronic stuff to guitar, etc) or worse than their old stuff (if you prefer guitar, etc to electronic stuff).

I'd like to hear more of it.

I guess you've heard of napster, right? It sounds like Spiritualized. I recommend any of their shit. It's good.

When I got the new album I didn’t think it was very good (I like Pablo Honey the most) but then I listened to it again and when I wasn’t doing anything else - I got a chance to appreciate the amount of production that went into this album and now its hardly out of my CD drive. One other thing, has anyone else noticed how most of the album is a bit Vangelis like, but track 5 could have been from the Blade Runner sound track.

Its a good album with classic moments: ("Where did you park the car?")

But its not greater than Ok Computer and not as easily accessiable like "The Bends" - but still top draw.

My only complaint is that "The National Anthem" starts brilliantly and ends with farting horns.......

It is the "Dark side of the moon" for the new millenium (note: I think that is a good thing, you may not).
It is a serioulsy wonderful listen, I love the experimental stuff as much as more conventional guitar driven stuff like "national anthem".
Every Radiohead cd contains at least one song which has "instant classic" written all over it, in this case it is "how to dissapear completely", it is as good a song as they have ever recorded (again a very good thing from my point of view), simply beautiful.
To anyone that misses the "old" Radiohead, ala "the Bends" & "Pablo Honey", you should probably go and buy that Muse albumn, it sounds like they have taken that ball and deflated it.

BUY GOOD HEADPHONES AND IMERSE YOURSELF!

I've got JJ72 and Coldplay. Agreed, both albums are good.

Back to the topic. I've listened to nothing, but this album for 2 days. I've had Optimistic for a long time and started to consider it a favorite, then I completed downloading it and plan on buying the CD.

It's easily all time top 10 material. Like Mu said, the production and complexity of this album are very easy to miss the first time around.

Here are the best lyrics I could find:

KID A LYRICS:

1. Everything In It's Right Place
2. Kid A
3. The National Anthem
4. How to Disapear Completely
5. Treefingers
6a. Optimistic
6b. In Limbo
7. Idioteque
8. Morning Bell
9. Motion Picture Soundtrack
10. Genchildren

1. Everything In Its Right Place

Everything, everything, everything, everything..
In its right place
In its right place
In its right place
Right place

Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon
Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon
Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon
Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon

Everything, everything, everything..
In its right place
In its right place
Right place

There are two colours in my head
There are two colours in my head
What was that you tried to say?
What was that you tried to say?
Tried to say.. tried to say..
To say.. to say.. to say...

Everything, everything, everything..
Everything in its right place

2. Kid A

I'm still awake
????

We've got heads on sticks
And you got them toothpicks
We got heads on sticks
But you go in circles

Standing in the shadows at the end of my bed (x4)

Rats and children follow me out of town
Rats and children follow me out of their homes

3. The National Anthem

Everyone
Everyone around.. yeah
Everyone just stop.. yeah
What's going on?
What's going on?

Everyone
Everyone just stop.. yeah
Everyone stop the fear
What's going on?
What's going on?

What's going on? (x3)

4. How To Disappear Completely

That man, that's not me
I go where I please
I walk through walls
I float down the Liffey

I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here, I'm not here

In a little while
I'll be gone
The moment's already passed
Yeah, it's gone

And I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here, I'm not here

Strobe lights and blown speakers
Fireworks and hurricanes

I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here, I'm not here....

5. Treefingers

Instrumental

6a. Optimistic

Flies are buzzing around my head
Vultures circling my bed
Picking up every last crumb
The big fish eat the little ones
The big fish eat the little ones
Not my problem give me some

You can try the best you can
If you try the best you can
The best you can is good enough
(x2)

This one's optimistic
This one went to market
This one just came out of the swamp
This one drops a payload
Fodder for the animals
Living on an animal farm

If you try the best you can
If you try the best you can
The best you can is good enough
(x2)

I'd really like to help you man
I'd really like to help you man.....

If you try the best you can
If you try the best you can
The best you can is good enough
If you try the best you can
If you try the best you can

Guess you'll wise up in the end
Guess you'll wise up in the end

6b. In Limbo

I'm on your side
Nowhere to hide
My jaw's(?) wide open
I'm smiling (I spiral down?) now

You're living in a fantasy world
You're living in a fantasy world

I'm lost at sea
Don't bother me
I've lost my way
I've lost my way

You're living in a fantasy world (x3)
This beautiful world

7. Idioteque

Who's in bunker, who's in bunker
Women and children first
Women and children first
Women and children
I'll laugh until my head comes off
I swallow till I burst
Until I burst
Until I..

Losing bunker, losing bunker
I've seen too much
I haven't seen enough
You haven't seen enough
I'll laugh until my head comes off
Women and children first
And children first
And children..

Here alone(?), everything all of the time
Here alone, everything all of the time

Ice age coming, ice age coming
Let me hear both sides
Let me hear both sides
Let me hear both..

Ice age coming, ice age coming
Throw me in the fire
Throw me in the fire
Throw me in the..

We're not scared under here(?)
This is really happening, happening
We're not scared under here
This is really happening, happening

Mobiles swirking(?)
Mobiles chirping
Take the money and run
Take the money and run
Take the money..

Here alone, everything all of the time
Background:
The first of the children

8. Morning Bell

Morning bell
Morning bell
I don't know the killer
Release me
Release me

You can keep the furniture
A bump on the head
Coming down the chimney
Release me
Release me
Please........
Release me
Release me

Where'd you park the car?
Where'd you park the car?
Clothes on(?) with furniture
And I might as well
I might as well
Sleepy jack the fire drill
Run around around around around around....

Cut the kids in half (x3)

?? and everything starts to bleed
And everybody lies to me
And everybody talks to me
When I am walking walking walking walking walking...

Everybody likes the rolls(?)
And everybody starts to tease
So tell your boy you'll never believe
And tell your boy you don't believe
Now tell your cousin
I'll tell you cuz I'm walking walking walking walking walking walking....

Everybody likes a roll (?)
And everybody starts to twirl
And then there
And there really were people who frown on the world
I'll tell you cuz I'm walking walking walking walking walking walking....

9. Motion Picture Soundtrack

White wine and sleeping pills
Help me get back to your arms
Cheap sex and sad films
Help me get where I belong

I think you're crazy, maybe
I think you're crazy, maybe

Stop sending letters
Letters always get burned
It's not like the movies
They fed us on little white lies

I think you're crazy, maybe
I think you're crazy, maybe

I will see you in the next life

10. Hidden Track (Genchildren)

Instrumental
