Question Best Album of the Ninties

Huh?

Brought to you by Top 5 Records.

Here are my two picks.

Downward Spiral -- Nine Inch Nails
Low End Theory -- Tribe Called Quest

What do you think?

That's a tough one.

Nirvana's "Nevermind" and Soundgarden's "Superunknown" are the two I've liked the best.

Despite popular belief, there has ben alot of great music in the last decade.

Reverend Horton Heat - Full Custom Gospel Sounds

or

Ministry - Psalm 69

I liked High Fidelity too. I saw Tenacious D (Jack Black's band) at House of Blues in Chicago when they were filming it. John Cusack introduced them:

"This next act asked me to read this. We've seen a lot of faces and we've kicked a lot of asses, so prepare to get your faces' asses kicked. Ladies and Gentlemen.. Tenacious D"

Live Art- Bela Fleck and the Flecktones

What becomes of the surplus of human life? It is either, 1st. destroyed by infanticide, as among the Chinese and Lacedemonians; or 2d. it is stifled or starved, as among other nations whose population is commensurate to its food; or 3d. it is consumed by wars and endemic diseases; or 4th. it overflows, by emigration, to places where a surplus of food is attainable.

hrm...
i think paint has the right of it with NIN's downward spiral. it was and is unparalleled in the music industry.

the whole "grunge" scene had a huge impact on music, for the better in my opinion, so i would also say "nevermind".

and, of course, i have to name "little earthquakes", by tori amos. even if you don't like the music, she approached subject matter in her songs (religion, rape, independence) that opened the eyes of a generation of young women.

and as much as i hate to say it, marilyn manson was a major player of the 90's with "portrait...". he brought that evil edge back to rock that faded away when ozzy stopped drinking blood on stage. no matter what you think of him, he's a great showman.

there was alot of great shit in the 90's.

Agony Column 'Brave Words and Bloody Knuckles' - although this may have hit the shelves in the late 80's, but it's still the most kickass album sold last decade.

[edit] checked to affirm the validity as a canidate for one of the best albums of the 90's and found the album was indeed released 1/15/91 on metal blade records.

Rage Against the Machine : 1st LP

Massive Attack : Protection

D'Angelo : Brown Sugar

TCQ : Midnight Maraurders (sp?)

Radiohead : The Bends

I think DMoon hit on the head with Horton Heat. Psalm 69 was good, too, but I don't put it in my top five.

from the year 1990 to the year 1999, these are the cds that I played incessantly:

PJ Harvey - 4-Track Demos
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Beastie Boys - Check Your Head
Reverend Horton Heat - Full Custom Gospel
Mudhoney - Piece of Cake

it would be easy to pick five more from that time period, too, but I think they'd be runners up to these. Just barely, though. curiously enough, all five of these are from the first half of the decade.

okayicantstanditihavetopostfivemore:

Clutch - Clutch
Grant Lee Buffalo - Mighty Joe Moon
Neil Young - Weld
Pavement - Wowee Zowee
Screaming Trees - Sweet Oblivion

------------------------
Fuck God and Fuck America, but I totally agree with Jerry. I'll send you my resume as Band Manager...

Yes, I was about to compliment DMoon on the Horton Heat pic. I didn't get it until about two years ago, though I have seen him live about 5 or 6 times. I have even drank with him!

the bends - radiohead

urban hymns - the verve

I can't say I ever wore out an LP, but when I think of high school, I know that I wore out the following tapes in my car:

Sister Machine Gun - The Torture Technique
White Zombie - La Sexorcisto
Ministry - Jesus Built My Hotrod EP
Nine Inch Nails - Broken

NIN - The Downward Spiral
Tool - Ænima
Marilyn Manson - Portrait of an American Family
Nirvana (Toss up between Nevermind and In Utero)

Sorry for not being more creative, but those are honestly what I believe are the best albums of the decade.

Hmm... top 5...
Nirvana- Nevermind probably had the biggest impact in the early 90's, helluva good record, but not my personal fave.

ATCQ- Low End Theory
Kicked all kinds of ass. Stand-up bass samples remain unmatched for soul.

Chemical Brothers- Dig Your Own Hole
Spent an assload of time on my heavy rotation list.

My Bloody Valentine- Loveless
Did as much to redefine guitar playing as Nevermind, IMO. I liked MBV better, tho.

Jane's Addiction- Ritual de lo Habitual
This is probably just my LA roots showing thru. One of the best live bands I've ever seen, all the same.

Nine Inch Nails- Pretty Hate Machine and The Cure- Disintegration were the tapes I wore out in high school, but they came out in '89.

That's about as much as I can narrow it down.
