Post the "you may have never heard of this" review

howdy. there's tons of good movies out there that fall through the cracks due to a variety of reasons: they were released at the same time as a big blockbuster, not enough of a marketing budget, didn't get favorable reviews, etc. so please share your review of a movie that you think very highly of that most people probably haven't heard about.

the house of yes:

starring:
josh hamilton
parker posey
tori spelling
freddie prinze jr.
genevieve bujold

this is one of the most disturbing dark comedies i've ever seen. the basic premise unfolds thusly:

marty (hamilton) returns home from college to see his family on holiday break. he fails to inform them that he is also bringing his fiancee (spelling) with him. in a normal household this probably wouldn't present a problem. what you soon come to realize though, is that this family is far from normal. jackie o (posey), marty's twin sister, becomes extremely upset over the new addition to the family. jackie is not your ordinary girl, as you learn when mother (bujold) runs to hide the kitchen knives. things turn even uglier when marty's little brother (prinze jr.) tries to put some moves on the fiancee! then the outrageous family secrets come out into the light and insanity reigns.

you have to see this movie. parker posey is the indie queen, and plays a bi-polar schizophrenic with eerie familiarity. and tori spelling is so typecast in this movie. i wonder if she actually READ the script before signing up to be this humiliated.

Yeah, I liked The House of Yes, too. I'll pretty much watch anything that Parker Posey is in. I think she is a great actress. She has been in a few good flicks; Henry Fool, Best in Show, and especially Clockwatchers, are among my favorites.

Everyone must see this movie.

The favor, the watch, and the very big fish.

Jeff Goldblum as Jesus.
Still kills me.

Here's a wicked good indie flick:

Three Seasons

It is in Vietnamese with English subtitles. Besides Harvey Keitel, the whole cast is pretty much unknown, but they all did some great acting. The cinematography was nothing short of brilliant. I'm pretty sure the movie was the winner of the "grand jury prize" at the Sundance Film Festival.

The movie is centered around a few characters. One is a little boy who sells trinkets, from a little case that he carries around with him, but get's his case stolen while having a drink with Keitel (an American G.I., who is in Vietnam waiting to meet his daughter, whom he has never seen before). Another is a young lady, who picks lotus flowers and sells them, and her relationship with her "teacher" (the leader of the religious cult or whatever that sells the flowers), who is an introverted old man with Leprosy. The last set of characters are a cyclo driver(one of those guys who give people rides for money on their bicycle), and the prostitute he falls in love with.

Because the movie was so wonderfully directed, you wouldn't really think it was an indie flick with a small budget, but it was. Go rent this movie.

Heres another good indie flick:

Adrenaline Drive

The movie is Japanese with english subtitles.

Here's the synopsis from the back of the movie case:

"He's a low paid, corporate employee, bullied by his boss and leading a hundrum existence. She's a shy, withdrawn nurse yearning for an exciting change to her drab circumstances.

Then, after a fender bender, Yakuza (Japanese mob) threats, a pot of tea, a huge explosion and an underwater ambulance ride, they end up together- with a huge cache of mob money, and seeminly no one on their trail. Their newfound life of adventure and romance is everything they hoped for - until the gangsters get a hold of their wedding announcements."

This was one of the funniest flicks I have ever seen. My favorite characters are the cronies that work for the head gangster. Some of the scenes where they (about 6 of them) are cramped in a car no bigger than a Ford Festiva, are absolutely hilarious. I had a smile on my face throughout the whole movie. I can definitely see why the movie got great reviews.

Morgana.. don't listen to what my bro says, I do like the House of Yes.
Parker Posey rocks. It saddened me to see her do Scream 3.

I can't think of good unknown movies right now.. I'll try and remember some though.

One of the best "unknown" films that I ever saw was a russian film named, "My life As A Dog." It's about a young boy growing up in a small town where the only future he sees available is working in the local glassworks like his entire family has for years. The title comes from his affinity with the dog the Soviets sent up in one of their early spaceshots named Latia. It's a sad movie but filled with a sense of wanting better things that really makes it interesting. It's a odd, "coming of age" movie that is definatly worth checking out.
