Post One of the best songs ever....

So, here I sit listning to some tunes, getting ready to head to bed, and I find an old track I'd forgotten about long ago... It's a "trip down memory lane" song, as it's from the very first LP I ever owned.

I think it's my #1 favorite of all time. Dire Straits, "Ride across the river" from the album "Brothers in Arms"..

"I'm a soldier of freedom in the army of man
We are the chosen, we're the partisan
The cause it is noble and the cause it is just
We are ready to pay with our lives if we must

Gonna ride across the river deep and wide
Ride across the river to the other side

I'm a soldier of fortune, I'm a dog of war
And we don't give a damn who the killing is for
It's the same old story with a different name
Death or glory, it's the killing game

Gonna ride across the river deep and wide
Ride across the river to the other side

Nothing gonna stop them as the day follows the night
Right becomes wrong, the left becomes the right
And they sing as they march with their flags unfurled
Today in the mountains, tomorrow the world

Gonna ride across the river deep and wide
Ride across the river to the other side"

What was the first album you ever owned?

------------------
Go there. I command it.

the coolest song that i have ever heard is a rather old song that sounds like it came out of the 70s.

it was a woman singing about herself. she sang how she was a lonely artist who works in a bank all day and painted at night. she sang about how lonely she was and how life was tough. that is by far my fave song. i heard it ONCE on a community radio program. i thought that the dj said it was joni mitchell but i have no idea as to what the name of the song is. if anyone can help me out, it would be greatly appreciated.

the cool thing about the song is that I really understood what she was singing about. i was at a wierd point in life and it really spoke to me. that and it was so simple and beautiful, it was one of the most purely personal songs ever.

i think it would have been michael jackson, thriller.
no shame in that, i guess. the shame comes from the all time i spent pretending i was a werewolf while listening to the title track.

Michael Jackson's "Thriller"

I even dressed up like him. I had the red jacket, the one glove, the leather pants...everything. I was also three.

[edit: Because I wrote the wrong one down first!]

Billy Bragg's 'Walk away Renee'.

She said it was just a figment of speech
& I said "you mean figure" and she said "no, figment"
because she could never imagine it happening, but it did.....

1.
When we first met I played the shy boy
and when she spoke to me for the first time
my nose began to bleed
she guessed the rest

the next day we went on a bus ride to the ferry
and when nobody came to collect our fares
well I knew then this was something special

I couldn't stop thinking about her and every time I switched on the radio
there was someone else singing a song about the two of us

it was just like being on a fast ride at the funfair
the sort you wanna get off because its scary
and then as soon as you're off, you wanna get straight back on again

2.
but, oh, love is strange
and you have to learn to take the crunchy with the smooth I s'pose
she began going out with Mr.Potatohead

It was when I saw her in the car park with his coat around her shoulders
that I realised

I went home and thought about the two of them together until the bath
water went cold around me

I thought about her eyes and the curve of her breasts and about the point
where their bodies met

3.
I confronted her about it,
I said "I'm the most illegible bachelor in town"
and she said "yeah that's why I can never understand any of those silly
letters you send me"

and then one day it happened, she cut her hair and I stopped loving her

It's fucking wicked. Get the tab and lyrics from
http://ils.student.utwente.nl/main/..._away_renee.tab

remember it's spoken, not sung...

I want to live and I want to love
I want to catch something that I might be ashamed of

The first "album" I owned was a shitty little sampler with some early 80s music on it. Madonna was on it, the rest I forgot.

And I remember Thriller, too. Michael Jackson was a god back then, but my friends and I listened mostly to the Jackson Five. Destiny and what's the one with the peacock feather called? Funny, while Jacko was still black, his music was good. Then he turned white...

And Tito was never heard from again.

Well, I think "L. A. Goodbye" by The Ides Of March was a hellaciously underrated song. So was "Tongue In Cheek" by Sugarloaf.

Amen.

Just Like Heaven, by either The Cure or AFI's cover. I actually found a decent british radio station while towing an engine yesterday. They were playing a bunch of "oldies" type stuff which seemed to range from the 50s to the early 70s or so. I found it funny that a lot of it sounded more "punk" than that is considered "punk" these days. I want to bury my head in the sand some times. Anybody know of any good "oldies" bands I should check out?
