In fact, many black families still live here in my town that originally came with my ancestors. I will continue to fly my Confederate flag because it means something to me. Celebrate failure? No, to me it celebrates courage in the face of insurmountable odds. Of course the south didn't have a chance. But by God they didn't go down without a fight. What if Washington had said of the Revolution, "Oh fuck it. We're outnumbered. Lets just stay loyalists."
...what is more American than the old west shoot out? Isn't that a extension of dueling?
I can imagine a black man and his young son walking down your street on memorial day weekend.
"Daddy, what's that flag for?" the little boy asks.
"Why son, that flag serves to remind us that his great-great grandpa used to own your great-great grandpa."
"Really?"
"Yup. It's also a reminder that a bunch of ignorant, isolationist, stubborn-minded fucks couldn't compete economically without enslaving other human beings. So, outnumbered and with minimum resources, they threw together an ad hoc government of antifederalists and started a pointless war that killed off most of an entire generation's young men."
The son says, "So they went to war for no good reason?"
"Well, son," the father says, "What if Washington had said of the Revolution, 'Oh fuck it. We're outnumbered. Lets just stay loyalists?'"
"Why, we'd all be speaking English now!" says son. "But of course, the Revolution was based on enlightenment principles. The war between the states, on the other hand, was fought to keep great-great grandpa working in the fields for free. That's fucking lame, dad."
Suddenly a large cartoon rooster runs from his porch to the street, shouting. "You, I say, you, young man, have insulted mah honah! I demand satisfaction!"
"What the fuck is this chicken talking about, dad?"
"Well, son, he's challenging you to a pistol duel, old west style. Probably at high noon. It's an American tradition!"
"Dad," the boy says, "old west gunfights are largely a myth based on a few incidents that took place over a two or three decade span. Hardly a tradition. Just a bunch of romanticized bullshit probably based off some old Charlie Russell painting. Most of that 'old west' shit is just a fairy tale."
"No old west?"
"No santa claus, and no happy antebellum south, either."
"Fuck it, I'm a-gonna take a nap," the large cartoon rooster says. "My life, I say, my history, is a hollow lie."
