Nutrimentia, in my humble opinion, this is excellent descriptive writing. You lay out, in a very clear and precise fashion, a description of Sumo Wrestling. But you add your insight to it and, in the end, I think this would make a wonderful magazine piece.

You started out with football, which is a great way to lose my attention. But then you got into the sumo stuff, and it sounds really interesting. I would love to take the time and actually watch it for a while.
Great writing.

I just gotta say thanks, guys. Thanks for reading me, commenting on it, and even more, for liking it. Its nice to know that people take time to read what you write, and even nicer when they like. I hope I can keep the good stuff coming.
(btw, paintchips didn't put you up to this did he? All of a sudden I get positive feedback from three people and I have to get suspicious;-)

Dammit.
Goatboy took my joke.
In any case:
Great piece. I find a lot of your comments also apply to people who question my fascination with boxing and martial arts in general. It is not just about two guys swinging wildly at each other.
Thumbs up.

Paint-
You jive on mma (mixed martial arts?) like UFC and Pride? I never watched any UFC, but I have gotten into Pride over here. A buddy and I actually have been doing webcasts of play-by-plays of the fights the last few tournaments. He gets them on PPV and we used Firetalk or PalTalk for broadcasting.
In case you aren't familiar with it, Pride is aiming to be the closest thing to no-holds barred street fighting, like UFC used to be. There are the basic rules, no biting, eye gouging, flesh tears, nut shots, or elbows, but other than that its pretty free. Some guys get beat up pretty bad, but the fights are great. Not sure if they are rentable over there, but I know they have DVDs, so maybe. Check out Pride 10 and the Grand Prix if you can.

I'm a big fan of ma and boxing. I used to watch all the sumo matches when they were shown back in the UK.
Good stuff.
Naseem Hamed is fighting this Saturday. Hopefully I'll be in NY to see the match.

Hey Nut! One big thing about sports your piece really hits on is this--knowledge and understanding of the sport is vital to appreciation and enjoyment of it. I would venture to say it's a common tendency of foreigners viewing sumo wrestling to perhaps completely miss out on the fact that it involves a tremendous amount of finesse.
BTW, I forget his name, but I'm sure you know who I'm inquiring about--whatever happened to that fellow from Hawaii who became the first foreign sumo champion in Japan? It's been several years since I've read or seen anything about him. Was he able to retire on top? Amen.

I hate sports on principle: philosphical and moral.
You scare me Nute. It's hard to hate the followers of sports when they acutally know what they're talking about. Thanks for ruining yet another narrowminded stereotype for me, you open-minded, too-observant bastard.
I'm going to read up on Sumo now.

JEB- You are referring to Akebono, the first foreign born yokozuna in Sumo. He actually just retired after a long stint on top. His knees finally gave out on him, which is no surprise considering that he about 6'9" and over 500 pounds and spends his life running into other people only *slightly* smaller than he is. He is highly revered as a Master of the sport and I was very, very sad to see him go.
There are no only 2 Grand Champions, but one is a fellow American, Mushashimaru. His nickname is the Moose, but only the American commentators call him that. The Japanese call him Maru-chan.
RW- I thought you were a gun nut like CAL. Isn't the main defense of wackos like you that guns are tools of the sporting?
