Damn!! Sounds like a wild ride. Some tips for next trip:
1. Advantage given is advantage taken.
2. Never judge a cover by its insides. (Just cause they're nice doesn't mean they're not skanky.)
3. Never ever ever ever carry a map within spitting distance of a bum.
I'm glad you got to sell your piece. I really liked the stuff I saw on your website. Cada did too. Oh, and don't think all of us internet peoples are losers IRL, just the ones in NY.

Don't give up Sarah, you've got a lot of talent and ability. You've also got a lot of knowledge, all you need now is some experience. I don't know why you picked new york, but maybe you can find somewhere else to apprentice, may I suggest Colorado?

I didn't, they talked to me 1st.
How it came about was that they emailed me looking for a piercing apprentice. (I assume they saw my ad in BME). they offered full benifits if I were to get hired on, and the guy said that he was adding on rooms for tattoo artists so I could probally learn that as well.
That's why I went at it like that.
My mistake was assuming that the guy knew what he was about, which I found he clearly did not when I got there to see.
ah well.
I'm not going to do anything like this again unless the incentive is really good.
or unless it's for fun.

PMG-
What an adventure!! Although this trip didn't turn out to be what you were hoping for or expecting, please, please, please do not resign yourself to staying in Columbus. Not that there is anything wrong with that, mind you, but there are lots of other places out there that are not New York.
In spite of the disappointing nature of this trip, look on the bright side of the experience, the experience itself. So what if it was a bust? As long as you don't get injured, it all goes towards wisdom and experience and whatnot. I do understand that you are really exctied about this line of work and this trip discouraged you, but as you said yourself, you are a determined person.
If I were you, I would plan my next trip to a local, state, or even national tattoo convention. Or plan to head out to Sturgis for the biker rally this summer. Or go to Vancouver to meet Anth3m, stopping at various cities along the way. Take a 3 week drive through the U.S., maybe with a friend, visiting places and seeing what is out there.
The more places you see, the sooner you will find the one that is right for you.
Buck up, little camper, and go get 'em.
RRRRRaaaarrrrrr!!!!

Sorry to hear this didn't work out, PMG. Scrimp and save--then move. You've got marketable temp skills, use them once you arrive. Get to know the piercing/tattooing scene. Start making connections.
I know I'm making this look way too easy....
It sounds like you didn't make it down to the Bowery, Lower East Side, and St. Mark's. My sense is that you'd find more than a few kindred spirits in those neighborhoods.
Quite a story, though.

Wow! is all I can say. I've been waiting to read about your trip. In a way, you should be a travel writer or even a journalist! Your writing about this trip and all the mishaps and disappointments you endured was as well written as any professional! You made me really feel for you. What a horrible experience it was!
You could have gotten to LaGuardia much easier than that from Times Square. You could simply have taken the "R" train to the 74th Street/Roosevelt Avenue stop (in Queens) and then taken the Q33 bus. It would have cost you $3.00.
And I cringed at your having spent the night in Penn Station. Your description was so "right on"! It's a horror show down there late at night!
But an experience like that will go a long way. Seeing so many unfortunate people might give you a better perspective on your own life and your own place in the world. And realizing that all people are not decent and upstanding and honorable is a good lesson, too.
But, again, I'm so sorry for you, Postmodgirl, that none of this concluded very well for you.
Love,
GFY!
