People in glass houses....
Looks like Australia isn't the only country having problems with the Great Unwashed.

It's been an issue here in the UK for quite a while now... We had that planeload of Afghans, who are still being deported now, I believe.
The ones you see on the news getting stopped will be the tip of an iceberg consisting mostly of ones who get in.

Plus we had 50 odd chinese die in a truck trying to get over on the ferry except the truck driver shut the truck up tight to prevent any noise getting out and they suffocated.

I just I thought Australia was the only country that had mandatory detention and was therefore a pariah. As I recall, our policy of mandatory detention led to a great deal of heckling and umm-ahhing by the British media. Now it seems you are getting into the act to.
I guess my real question is: how much public support is there in Britain regarding asylum seekers being allowed to live in the community till their claims are processed?

Some support, especially from the immigrant community already here who have claimed that a policy of detention is rascist and from teh left wing in particular. It is illegal for them to work, they get food coupons (I've seen some being spent in my local supermarket).
One was killed recently in Glasgow (Sighthill estate) and there are often difficulties if a lot are put to live in one place.
I think that the disapproval was more that they weren't allowed to land before being processed, not the policy of detention.
We have been detaining asylum seekers for years, I thought.
