Question Cuckoo's Nest

Seeing how Jack Nicholson in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", is the mascot of the Asylum, I was wondering; Has anyone else here besides me ever read the book?

Here's the pic of my 1962 copy. I love this book!

*adds it to his collection, next to his 1965 copy of "Lurker at the threshhold"*

I like it. Seriously, if you can, read it. It's a million times better than the movie.

i believe that the movie would have been a hell of a lot better if they would have done it like the book (ie. in the perspective of big chief) thats just my opinion though..never let people borrow books i never get mine back. i lent this one to a friend over a year ago and still no book and i never see her owell

I read it after seeing the movie and am hard pressed to admit the book is better. It is but the movie was superb. A great combo I think.

Speaking of Kesey, anyone ever been up to the Oregon Country Fair? In the late 80s/early 90s I used to go annually. Now that's a freak show and a half!

"Cuckoo's Nest" is a great book, I also love Kesey's "Sometimes a Great Notion." The movie version with Paul Newman is just so-so.

I'm named after a character in that movie. I happen to love the flick. Maybe I'm biased though.

Really? Who? Leland? Hank? You don't have their last name, too, do you? Stamper?

Am I the only one that likes the movie more than the book?

Kesey is only a so-so writer. I have read a few of his books, and find all but Cuckoo's Nest pretty substandard. His best book is one which he didn't even write, Electric Acid Kool-Aid Test, which I try to read at least once a year. Keeps my teeth sharp.

Oh, ouch! Kesey's "Demon Box" is a good read, too.

You haven't heard of it? Holy shit. That is such a great fucking hippie/beat book. It's about the Merry Pranksters, a group of psychadelic lunatics who were basically the coolest scene of the 60s in my book. They helped start the Grateful Dead among other things. I keep calling karen Mountain Girl, because she reminds me of her, and she gets pissed because she doesn't know the reference and thinks I am making fun of her.

Man, go get that book and read it immediatly.

And yeah, I actually have read Demon Box, and thought it was alright. Still, because of Cuckoo's Nest, he got a rep as a Great American Writer, whereas Cuckoo's Nest was, IMHO, the only thing he ever wrote of any import. The other's are just so-so.

*puffs up and gets all defensive*

Ohh yeah! Well Joseph Heller was the best man!...well....at least that one book anyway.

*calms down*

Actually I'd have to say the most impressive writing is actually Lovecraft. That man wrote shit in the 20's that still creeps me out.

When you get down to it though I have SO MANY favorite authors in diff catagory's it's hard to even argue about them all.

Heller is a much better writer than Kesey, but same deal. Decent writer, stumbles on the great American novel, then using his inflated rep publishes a dozen substandard novels.

But fuck yeah, Lovecraft is the shizit. I have like 10 of his books. I think I left them in Maine though.

Lovecraft is incredible. It amazes me that reading the same words for the 100th time can still make me uncomfortable.

After reading Wolfe's "Electric Kool-Aid Acid Tests," I *so* wanted to be Neil Cassidy (sp?). The nifty thing is that Cassidy is of course immortalized by Kerouac in "On the Road." Neat link there--1950s Beat Generation; 1960s hippies.

It's tough to be a counter-culture "god" for two decades.

There's a semi-interesting book called "Majic Bus" that documents a college prof's "road class." Anyone read it? The prof and about 20 students toured the country on a bus, reading "great" literature along the way. The book smacks of commercialism and selling-out, in that early 90s Dead-Head-Sticker-on-a-Cadillac/pay-$25-for-a-tie-dye way. But it's interesting nonetheless. Me, I would have killed for such a class when I was a student.

Sorry Paint, Kesey's the man....
