hands

I posted a thought about this a while ago at THT. I put it into words today to share with my dad. I felt like sharing it with you. I hope you all have a close relationship with your parents.

September 21, 2001

Dear Dad,

Recent events in the world have brought many of us to a state of self-reflection; myself included. I watch with amazement as the World as we know it changes minute by minute. I see the sorrow of loved ones as they wish they had just one more chance to say I love you to those that fade into the darkness of our hearts and the memories of our minds. I hope that our family is never faced with the surreal reality of losing anyone in such acts of violence or political cause. I do, however, appreciate the fact that the events that occurred gave me a wake up call. It gave me the insight to stop and say thank you and that I love you.

I want to thank you for the greatest gift I think you have given me. My hands. When I look at my hands, I see your hands. The lines of age are beginning to take shape and they reflect the image of your hands. Hands that show wear from never being afraid of a hard day’s work. Hands that are able to convey and express thoughts from a strong mind. Hands that can be made into fists to stand up for my beliefs and protection of those that I love. Hands that can be thrown into the air in free admittance of needing assistance. Hands that are not afraid or embarrassed to embrace those that I love. Hands that are confident and extended to meet new friends. Hands that are willing to reach out to those less fortunate and in need. These are all gifts that you have given me. Reflected through my hands. Your hands. And for this I will always be thankful.

I want you to know, dad, how much I truly love you. I know that I may not always say it; I know I may not always show it. As busy as my days may be and as far away as I may sometimes seem, know that not a moment goes by that you are not held special in my heart and in my thoughts. Everything I do, I do for you. My hopes are that one day I will be half the man that you are. I hope that I can be a shining example and a beacon of light for my children. I hope that my grandchildren will love me as much as yours do you. I hope the business world has the same respect for me as your colleagues have for you. I hope that my words hold as much wisdom and experience as yours do.

Know that these things are true. That I will love you and be eternally thankful to you.

Love
Travis

If I could tell the world just one thing
It would be that we're all OK
And not to worry 'cause worry is wasteful
And useless in times like these
I won't be made useless
I won't be idle with despair
I will gather myself around my faith
For light does the darkness most fear

My hands are small, I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken

Poverty stole your golden shoes
But it didn't steal your laughter
And heartache came to visit me
But I knew it wasn’t ever after

We'll fight, not out of spite
For someone must stand up for what's right
'Cause where there’s a man who has no voice
There ours shall go singing

My hands are small I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken

In the end only kindness matters
In the end only kindness matters
I will get down on my knees, and I will pray
I will get down on my knees, and I will pray
I will get down on my knees, and I will pray

My hands are small I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken

My hands are small I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken
We are never broken

We are God's eyes
God's hands
God's mind
We are God's eyes
God's hands
God's heart
We are God's eyes
God's hands
God's eyes
We are God's hands
We are God's hands
