Is this not taking the piss a bit

I mentioned this in passing and it seemed to be ignore, and I thought it might be worthy of a thread in itself.

What do we all think about these 'leaflets that are being dropped in conjunction with the bombing raids? The leaflets if you did not know about them say "The partnership of nations is here to help" and are printed in Arabic depicting an Allied soldier shaking hands with an Afghani. (below)

Now, I kind of understand the 'logic' behind the drops, ie that is supposed to try and reinforce the idea that we are not at war with the afghani people. But lets be honest now, if you saw planes flying over your homes dropping bombs and then a leaflet like this was dropped would you not be a little pissed off? Is it not a rather cynical piece of propaganda and moralising bullshit?

I mean, I also understand this belief that somehow the leaflets and the allies words will make the afghani people rise up against their own oppressors. But is not this idea rather naive also? We played this card in Iraq. Did it work?

where are they supposed to get their news from?
how many do you think really know whats going on?
do you think the taliban is giving fair representation of current events?
most of them dont even have radios, I think its mighty considerate not to mention productive to relay the message on those leaflets in one of the very few ways we can.

Not that there is anyone in Afghanistan can read anyway.
The filthy cretins are using the pamphlets to wallpaper their shacks.
The sheer nerve of it all.

I would'nt consider this a 'news source' personally. Hell, what I am saying is put yourself in _their_ shoes. What would you think?

Its would be like walking down the street, being robbed, and then robber turning round and asking to be your friend.

Do you honestly, and truthfully believe that the starving millions of Afghanistan that see these leaflet dropped after they see loads of explosion are going to look at them and think 'they like us really these Westerners. they care'. Or are they more likely to keep the leaflet and burn it too keep their family warm?

You do realize that there are plenty of Afghanis who are not fond of the Taliban, right? And not just the ones with guns in the Northeast either.

Well, yes, actually, it did. We managed to start a pretty good-sized insurrection among the Kurds. Then, because we didn't want to be seen as imperialists, we walked off and left them to be exterminated.

Which is a mistake worthy of criticism. On that occasion, we failed to be colonialist enough. Here's hoping we don't make that mistake twice.

I think the more interesting aspect of dropping leaflets is that the majority of the people can not read there.

kills the point huh?

Besides, if someone bomed your neighbors house, then sent you a leaftlet saying they werent trying to get you, only your neighbor....wouldnt you still be pissed?

In all honesty, If iwas in their shoes, I wouldn't give a flying fuck. Imagine if you were in a country at a constant state of war for 20 years. Would you give 2 shits? Starving, oppressed, uneducated people just don't give a fuck.

i don't really know anything about afghani law, but in these parts, if you scatter leaflets all over the ground you get a $300 fine for transporting an unsecured load.

If they can get the US to pay up for all the littering, afghanistan may be able to rebuild once "we" are done over there.

this just in:

Tens of thousands of Afghani children maimed in a spate of particularly nasty papercuts.

Apparently, the UN skimped on the budget for the leaflets and the happy handshaking crap was printed on thin, inflexible card.

Oh, the humnanity.

As for the "news reporting", I was a bit surprised (but suppose I shouldn't have been) to hear a few days ago that most Afghanis don't know about the WTC atrocity.

Bleh, considering TV is banned and there is only 1 radio station that basically plays a guy shouting allah akbar over and over again. I think some journalists played a video of the WTC plane crash to some fundamentalist madrassa school kids. Like usual they justs kept saying "A muslim is not responsible for this." Then the journalists showed them the new Christina Agulilaralaas new video, which the students began to cut themselves, pull out their then angrily attacked the TV set with their foreheads.

I'm pretty sure the US policy in Israel is the reason why the Taleban stole half of the UN refugee foodsuppy, transport trucks. drivers, etc..... Viva la socilaliste.
