Anti-Gay Bomb Slur Wrong, Navy Says

WASHINGTON (AP) - An anti-gay slur written on one of the bombs used in the strikes on Afghanistan was inappropriate and commanders have been directed to prevent similar incidents, a top Navy official said.

Pilots or crews of U.S. warplanes often write messages on bombs, either taunting the enemy or praising America. Messages written on bombs during the anti-terrorism airstrikes have included several references to the Sept. 11 attacks.

A news photograph of a plane on the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier last week showed one bomb with the message, ``High Jack This,'' followed by an anti-gay slur.

The Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights group, complained about the bomb's message. Rear Adm. Stephen Pietropaoli, in a letter to the group Wednesday, said the Navy does not tolerate discrimination and the bomb's message was an ``isolated incident.''

Several newspapers across the country also asked the Navy about the bomb's message earlier this week, said Pietropaoli, the Navy's chief of information.

``We immediately notified Navy commanders involved with Operation Enduring Freedom to ensure steps were taken to prevent a recurrence of this unfortunate incident. They have done so,'' Pietropaoli wrote.

Elizabeth Birch, executive director of Human Rights Campaign, said in a statement that the letter was ``a welcome clarification and we are pleased the Navy has stated that this type of anti-gay behavior has no place in our armed forces.''

Why doesn't it surprise me that someone who would resort to slurs against homosexuals when faced with a pressing need for an insult would also not be able to spell?

I had to begin reading the article before I realized that "high jack" meant "hijack"...

A little punctuation would be in order, too, I think.

And don't argue poetic license to me, buddy!

Odds are it was some dumbassed Airman Apprentice or something like that who wandered onto the flight deck and wanted to be cool like the rest of the airdales. The guy will probably get reamed out by some Chief before the day is up.

Why does the department of consumer affairs force piano manufacturers to put warning lables like "Swallowing this piano can cause serious injury or death" but there is no warning lable on that bomb!

It doesn't have a D.O.T sticker or a hazard identifier diamond.

Now that's just plain irresponsible!

This whole "PC" movement... it's annoying. It's stupid. I think and say things that aren't politically correct sometimes. Other times, my beliefs happen to coincide with what it currently "PC". The real problem with the "PC" movement is that at its core is the idea that there are certain opinions one should not hold. Its very nature stifles free speech and healthy debate.

In my dialect, euphorbia is wrong... nigger and fag still are mainly used as insults to the people they were originally meant to insult. And when they're used against other people, the implication is that being black or gay is not acceptable. Everyone's opinion is their own, but I don't see anything wrong with being either.

Bombs don't have to be PC, and I wouldn't expect anything more from some intolerant Navy deckscrubber (read: this deckscrubber in particular, not all Navy men), but that doesn't mean I think it's cool that he wrote it. Should there be some horrible public outcry? It won't do any good. But people are welcome to say that this guy is ignorant.

Obviously there was a need for some sort of potent word to fill in the blank on that bomb, and I just think it is unfortunate that the guy who wrote it feels that saying someone is gay is an insult. Not surprising, just unfortunate. He's obviously not that bright, since there are plenty of other potent ways to insult someone without referring to sexual preference or race.

"Hijack this, cowardly motherfuckers!"

Just my humble opinion, though.
