Do leaders take advice?
I have just seen a news story that has George W. Bush saying (via satellite to Eastern European leaders), having compared Osaama Bin Laden's Al-Queada to the nazis and saying that they are seeking nuclear, chemical and biological weapons:
quote:
I wouldn't put it past him to develop evil weapons
Like the ones that we all have, presumably?
I appreciate what he appears to be trying to say and I agree; but is our media portraying him harshly (unfair selective quoting), or is he lacking political savvy in the wider (international) arena? If he is like Blair, nothing leaves his mouth unless it has been spin-doctored first.
I am inclined to think that this might be unfair reporting of what his advisors prepared for him to say (although in peace time he did appear to be somewhat unsteady on his 'verbal feet'). But how much does he speak 'off the cuff' and how good is he at improvising in that way? Blair is not very good, to give my opinion on the UK leader.
But, what I am really interested in is the role of advisors (and policy-makers in general). How important are they in teh US political landscape? How important should they be?
I am not posting my opinion (such as it is) here now as I am currently righteous drunk. I am interested to find out what power advisors have though.
PS Apologies for saying 'political landscape'.

He is not a polished politician, he is a down home boy.
He likes his ranch, baseball, BBQ, his wife, his mom and the rest.
He likes his country, and capitalism...I would be comfortable around him in a social situation. He speaks publicly very poorly, but at least I believe what he say when it is coming off the cuff, instead of all the time every little thing, movement, word, facial expression seeming fake, practiced and with some underlying motive (cause he’s just not that calculative).
He speaks well off the cuff, he makes poor speeches.
He also seems like the kind of person who isn’t too proud or arrogant to take advice from those who know better than he does and seemingly he built his cabinet up with people who could advise him well. This is all just my opinion though. I can promise they vary widely and passionately.

I think that there is truth in that, U4b.
In chat, Indigo said that he is 'bad in a suit'.
That may be it, as that is the only way that we see him as a rule over here. He certainly has a lot of appeal to 'everyday americans' I gather.
In this regard, do you think that he ought to have others speaking for him more? In chat, we were discussing how important 'looking good' is for a leader, particularly in the media-saturated US and also in Europe (witness the rise of Blair and Schroeder), where politics is becoming more TV oriented.
What are the roles of advisors/cabinet members and what is the role of the leader? Is the leader just there to take the majority of the blame and some of the credit?

people still believe that major polititions aren't puppets?
wow. i didn't realize.
then again the only substantive difference i can see between the republicans and the democrats is that the latter have younger leaders.
i also like how the media only covers this policing the world stuff in a positive light. and it does so in such a straitforward and un-sensationalized mannor...
but then again, what do i know.
and you're forgiven for the political landscape drivel.
