I just noticed that my postcount was about to become the year of birth. And it struck me how little I know about 1971.

I do know that decimalisation (the switch to a decimal currency in the UK) happened a month before I was born.

Not much else.

Do you know what happened in the year that you were born?


(If I can make an obvious couple of jokes: in the year of Krogoth's birth, I had a really rough lay with some American chick. And the wheel was invented shortly before wonder's birth. I just didn't want goatboy to steal my obvious jokes.)

I believe there were a few things that had happened.. I can't think of anything off of the top of my head though..
but the Smashing Pumpkins did do a song about my year of birth.. 1979....

I was born the day of the cease fire that ended the Yom Kippur war. The Bahamas enacted their constitution. The American Indian Movement seized control of Wounded Knee. American Graffiti" and "The Exorcist" were released. The last U.S. combat soldiers leave Vietnam. Watergate fills up hundreds of column inches in newspapers.

I was born in 1979.

Off the top of my head:

I think there was a gasoline shortage and people were driving 55 mph on the highways after that (I know it was late 70's at least).

I'm pretty sure it was the year that My Sharona came out.

The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.

There was something going on over at Three Mile Island.

Apocalypse Now came out (I studied film for a bit in college and had to find a movie that came out in the year of my birth), so did Kraemer vs. Kraemer (Academy Award for that one).

John Wayne died (there's an airport named after him about five minutes from my university).

And who could forget: Rapper's Delight by the Sugar Hill Gang was released (thank you History of Rock n' Roll class in university!). The best part is when he raps about his "super sperm."

Carter was president (on his way out).

I share the date (Feb. 16) with Sonny Bono (joy), Ice-T ("cop killer" who plays a cop on t.v.) and LeVar Burton (Reading Rainbow kicked so much ass when I was a kid!)


That's all I can remember. I'm going to check the site to see if I screwed anything up in my memory (yes, my steel trap of a memory does that sometimes).
