Afghanistan's New Prime Minister Seeks Taliban Surrender

That title in its self is striking yes?

This whole thing has exceeded expectations (by any reasonable person anyway) All those critics predicting awful out comes and spewing worst case scenarios as if they were almost destined to happen now have to find something else to whine about. I know there have been a few flaws and I’m sure there are going to be other problems, but friendly fire incidents are a far cry from something like the people of Afghanistan turning against our troops and other gloomy forecasts yelled from the naysayers.
Those people whining will always find something to cry about almost never acknowledging any of the positives and get good representation here on the forum, but I think realists take heart and are grateful for progress so far, which in my opinion is astounding, considering everything involved.

Anyway, here is the article that goes with that title.

The UN has done a good job of driving through a deal here. I saw a report, where the reporter said that the last deal lasted less than a week (some time ago) but that he was more hopeful for this deal.

Of course, it will take years until the significance of this is seen, but it does present them all with a second chance to get stuff right.

As a side issue, I think that one fo the problems with political debate is that quite often the effects of an event or policy or whatever take a long time to be seen so although we can 'wait and see', it can take a pretty long time to find out what the result is.

I am optimistic about this, although I think that our involvement might last a little longer. But it appears as it for many purposes it will be run semi-autonomously on a local tribal basis for most matters, and that might be the only workable solution short term. It will be interesting to watch, I hope that people in the West doin't just lose interest in it like they did after the Russian withdrawal, and keep looking to see how it develops.

One waits with baited breasth. The most intersting time will come when no foreign forces are in Afghanistan.

Lets see if Meglomaniac Rashid Dostum can sit down and STFU.
Someone needs to put one in his head.

I'm generally optimistic, but i agree it isn't quite over.

just don't count your chickens before tehy hatch. expect the worst and hope for the best. that sort of thing.

when one lets down one's guard, bad things happen.

i'm sure you know that though. and it is an interesting juxtaposition to the doomsayers.
