i was once startled by alpacas.

cool things about llamas...

1. They can scare away wolves! Some wolf-friendly ranchers are employing them as a way to guard their livestock, rather than shooting the wolves.

2. They look utterly ridiculous when they run. All flat-backed, with their necks sticking straight up in the air. One panicked in a field near a street, and busted through the fence, nearly causing a 6 car pile up on each side of the road when drivers braked to avoid hitting it.

Alpaca sweaters are absolutely divine.

Mounting does not mean that penetration has occurred. Females with full coats on their posteriors are more challenging to penetrate and more problematic for a male. Breeding is done in the prone position and takes at least 15 minutes since the male dribbles, rather than ejaculates, semen into the female uterus. While breeding, the male makes a continuous "orgling" noise and occasionally moves his front legs along the sides of the female. The mating process induces the female to ovulate so she can become pregnant.
