How alert are you?

Stemming from the other thread about Biothreat rumopurs, and also from a conversation I had with inky yesterday. Something that is a way of life for me, and amainl, and smug and goat, and pretty much every limey, is acute awareness to suspicious bags in train stations, airports etc, unattended bagge anyhere that sort of thing. They don't even have bin (trash cans) in stations or airports anymore because you can put a bomb in them. Daily we are reminded on the trains of unattended bags etc etc.

I was wondering if the US had started going down this line of awareness?

In the run up to the Christmas period we are here, once again, saturated by this issue, (terrorists like causing havoc at xmas) and now the threat is not just irish but also muslim extremism.

Of course, whilst we have all these warnings, we are still generally blase about it. The number of times I have seen a train station worker go up to an unattended bag and give it a kick to see if anything happens are untold. But like I say, is the US having this kind of security awareness programming now on busses, trains, stations, tv etc?

I don't think the US is really aware of how things could be just yet, but then the nature of the attacks here don't lend one to be suspicious of unattended bags so much as tall buildings and airplanes.

I guess, but terrorists sometimes become very unsophisticated and wage campaigns of 'low level terror' (for want of a better term) especially if they become small and limited in numbers. I just wondered whether the ordinary way of life for Londoners (and many others, especially those in Belfast) had filtered in yet.

yeah, i haven't noticed anything quite like that yet...though I do have to say that I do live in East Texas, where we have a small chance of being attacked. Not to say we aren't affected, cause you do notice a change in attitude, but not swinging to the way that you are suggesting.

People were freaking out whenever they saw some white powder that they automatically assumed was anthrax, as opposed to seeing an unattended bag, and also people more cautious w/ their mail (though the actual chances of them getting anything like such in their mail is quite slim).

Well. I suppose the shopping mall might be a target here for that sort of attack, and well I avoid that place like the plague anyways.

eh, quite slim, virtually non-existant, I have heard them both to describe Ally McBeals skinny ass, so I figured they were interchangable.

Ah, so THAT'S why all the bins were removed from the train stations here during the 2000 olympics. What a pain in the arse. It all makes sense now, thank you sp00ky.
