OTAN, China — A crowd gathered in a sports stadium beneath a blue morning sky here in October to watch court officials sentence a man to death, a scene that has been played out hundreds of times across China this year as part of the Communist Party's latest drive against crime.

But this rally was different. The man, Metrozi Mettohti, 34, was given the death penalty for trying to "split the country" and for storing weapons as part of a persistent and occasionally violent separatist movement among China's Uighurs, the Turkic- speaking ethnic group of nine million people, most of them Muslims, concentrated along the country's far western border.

Six other men were given jail terms of up to 12 years that day for separatist activities, said local residents and activists abroad. According to one account, Mr. Mettohti shouted "Long live Eastern Turkestan!" — the name of the country separatists would like to create — before being gagged.

After the rally, local people say, he was put in the back of a truck, driven to a village outside of town and shot in the back of the head. The execution could not be officially verified.

The fragile, fertile strip between China's rugged western mountains and its vast western desert is the only place in the country where people are regularly put to death for political offenses. The country's current anticrime drive, coupled with a renewed focus on Islamic militancy in the wake of the American-led war on terrorism, has only increased the pace of the executions, Uighurs say.

A certain someone must have missed it on his daily topic posting frenzy. Of course I have brought up issues in other countries and called a "cultural imperialist" here on this forum(cause I’m American of course and when other countries do fucked up shit its culture. ) because I was talking about things like the Taliban and The Chinese death houses for unwanted children more than a year ago (probably two) before any one caught wind of any of the current events in the news today.

I guess that no one expects much from China by way of humane behaviour. For example, I saw a documentary last week about how goods made with slave labour in Chinese prisons were shipped to the West (they tracked some boots to the US but the defector said that a lot of other stuff went into the West) but I didn't post it because I thought that it wouldn't be a great surprise to everyone. Aren't we trying to bribe China to change (seeing as there is no possibility of bashing them into it)? I have friends who have been there and had a decent time, although there is a big difference between the countryside and the cities.

The really vile stuff that we don't see much of goes on in Africa. Seeing 8 year olds who had had their hands macheted off so that they can't carry arms when they grow older was really the most sickening thing that I have seen.

Clearly all of these incidents are the results of US Imperialism. Unfortunately, the translation into three chinese dialects of 'Happy Meal' is 'Kill Political Dissidents'. We won't even mention the translation of 'Super Size'.

My point (as it seems to escape you) is that human babarity is everywhere and applies to our country as well as our enemies. Canadian and American and British goverments have all committed horrible atrocities whether against indigenous populations or others. Fact. Just as nearly every country with power has done, for all of recorded history. The people that we hate have no monopoly on murder, bloodshed, and ruined lives.

If you call wiping out the native population of what is now the United States inalogous to the Chinese wiping out a Muslim minority that is hostile to their government for dominating and marginalizing them, then I'd say you're wrong. I'd also say that carpet-bombing millions of Vietnamese, because Ho Chi Minh was on the wrong side of the political spectrum, was analogously brutal to the hundred of thousands of innocent civilian casualties there, as well. And let's not discuss Canada's own punitive Indian treaties, residential schools, cowboy diplomacy, etc. And the British Empire, well, it's had the opportunity to exploit and exterminate people of many different cultures and creeds.

But aside from all that, I challenge you to find one country that has never waged a brutal war or committed a horrifying slaughter in its existence. I think you will be hard-pressed.

And like I said, leave you insults at the door, or stop talking to me. You find your own things to complain about, and you too always seem to find breath to share them with us. But I do not criticize your exercise of speech, except where you disrespect me and others. You too, have never seen your friends dismembered in front of you, or felt the life being crushed from your body. So shut up, if you must be so plainly hypocritical.
