Pakistan/India. Nows there a tricky situation for Bush et al
Gotta admit this one is tricky. The 'war on terrorisms' mission is to stop governments supporting terrorists. Afghanistan and the Taliban was the first and Pakistan played a key role in its support of America. (self interst being the guidance in that one really and nothing else). So Pakistan became a new freind of the US.
Now we have Indian troops building up on the Pakistan border in response to the terrorist suicide bombing by a Pakistani in India. The political side of this issue being the Kashmir question. India says General Musharref (is that how its spelt?) supports terrorists.
Where will the US stand on this one? Dicey, very dicey.

Obviously we'll ignore it until we have no further use for Pakistan. Then we'll turn around and be all angry with them.

I do find it concerning though that every tom dick and harry country is now using the 'war on terrorism' justification to settle differences with violence. I guess this is one of the repurcussions of the only superpower's hegemonous nature, and the global media that sent the message out to the world.

Precedents indeed , if the US wants to stay consistent about this war on terrorism, all sorts of palava may occur.
For instance, "Ahmed, go blow yourself up down the post office old boy, would you", we need an excuse to carpet bomb the Sri Lanken cricket team.

Appearantly that went way over your head. I won't bother with explaining what is self-explanatory.

If it becomes necessary for us to take a stand before we are "done" with afghanistan, we will take pakistan's side, and say that won don't think Musharref (if that'as how you spell it) is supportging terrorism.
If we no longer need pakistan, then we may very well take india's side, because of their size, numbers, and great computer programmers, but I highly doubt it.

I would like to see the US emphatically tell Musharef to control those who send terrorists into Kashmir and India.
Now, and not later.

He already did.
Is there anything our government could do on this issue that wouldn’t be a source of contempt to anyone so far in this thread?
What exactly would you suggest?
We have already demonstrated our feelings about the matter by telling/asking Pakistan to do all it can to investigate and stop the people involved in the activity.
Unless you are sure the Pakistan government is involved, what can be done?

Send in people to investigate via a 3rd party IE UN... or EU (perhaps it'll have a lil more luck in accomplishing something)
I also believe the UN should investigate my nations inadherance to conventions dealing w/ biological weapons-- so you dont call me a hypocrite.

umm, you think pakistan would LET the UN send in a force to investigate? I don't think they would. and we can't very well tell a volatile state, and nuclear power that if they don't let us come dick with their internal affairs we're going to start bombing them, oh and by the way, may we continue to use your airstrips and airspace while we're blowing you to holy hell?

this an interesting point, because Somalia has no real government as such too, just warlords.

From the speech Bush is giving right now it appears our sights have now been set on terrorists groups in Kashmir.

This is the Bush and Rice of "selective engagement." We're going to do nothing about India and Pakistan. We'll declare we have no interest, and let them fight it out. We're really worried about terrorists targetting us. Let the other guys blow themselves up however they want. As my history professor was fond of saying, "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter." Much like Palestine, the Kashmir is a problem that seems to have genocide as the only solution.
Happy Holidays!

Scary stuff. Even if it does read as total propaganda.
paknews is generally propagandaish bs... if you want a news site to refer to from that area of the world, times of india is pretty good so far, from what ive read. i've also seen that they've bashed the indian government in the past... which demands some respect...
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/
then again, i dont think any news source can be completely impartial.
by the way, ive collected some information on the history of india and pakistan and their troubles, and whats been going on recently between the two of them. I'm going to analyze it further and then post on it.
take care, merry xmas... happy new year.
