Saving money....
I never have much money.
It's usually feast or famine for me because I work temp.
So how do I save any money for a rainy day?
I buy things when I have the money.
For example, I bought some shoes on sale during the summer, really nice ones. $60. a pair. I bought 3 pairs, needed only one. Took them back the other day and put about $150. back into my acct.
Basically I buy things from places that I can return them easily. I don't just buy anything, but I buy what I want, and it just turns out that I don't use it for whatever reasons.
I don't earn any interest on these savings, but I also can't spend the money until I take the stuff back.
In the last few days I put several hundred in my bank acct. If I didn't have that, I don't know what I would have done.
Do you have a quirky method for saving money?

I put it in my checking account. If it makes it to next payday, I considered it saved.

that's how I do it too. I keep talking about pawning the stuff I have, since I got most of it for less than I could sell it for. I suppose I could make good money going out and buying crap for a lot less than it's worth and reselling it, but that is too ahrd and I am lazy.

I don't do that. I just return it if I haven't used it in a few months.
for whatever price i paid. I make no profit or interest.

At a pawn shop:
A 50 dollar PSX game = $0.50
That's like a 49 dollar loss.

You could always buy shares. Take them back and get more than you started with
this doesn't apply to dotcoms, natch.

If my account is no longer negative after I deposit my check, I consider it a "good" payday.
"Saving" doesn't even come near my account. :shake:

Well, I closed my checking account, opened a savings, and cancelled my atm card. This way I have to actually go to the teller line to get money. Course, when you work at a bank, that's not very inconvient. It's not working...
I just spent too much money on something I really didn't need tonight. But it sure was fun.

Buy used guns. They usually go up in value and no one has the guts to take them from you.
Honestly, that is a way I invest. When I need some cash I sell a gun.
Guns = solid investment!
If they become worthless I can use them to rob a gas station.

Took the words out of my mouth Dog breath. I also fix guns up and then sell them. I just refit a tech 22 with a nice new threaded barrel, and got a 30 round magazine for it.
Shoud make about $200 profit off the little bastard.

The good thing with me is that I don't enjoy shopping at all. I don't like being in a mall for more than 20 mins. But, if cash is readily available I will nickel and dime it away. I'll buy magazines, junk food, all sorts of things I don't need.
The good thing is that I have a new job and the money is going directly into an account at the credit union that I cannot find the ATM card for. I am working all the time, weird hours, so I don't have time to spend much anyway. I have been able to spread the little bit of cash I got over my birthday and Christmas out and it has been covering my pocket expenses. I think by now I have two or three checks that have gone into the bank and remain untouched. I'm going to keep that up as long as possible.

Tickets to Sydney don't come cheap.
Good thing you're saving up now.

Saving money is easy. I'd bet you waste a lot of money on food and toilet paper. If you cut your food intake in half, you'd probably cut your toilet paper use almost in half too. Perhaps you have an arm or a leg that you don't use very much, if you were to remove it, you wouldn't be wasting food nourishing it.

I feel your frustration, Inky. I'm the same way. I'm trying really hard to save money this year, but as soon as I get any excess, I go and spend it. Whenever I go shopping (I do most of it online), the first thing I check is their return policy, cause I always wind up returning stuff. Sad, isn't it?
Do you have an ATM card? If you do, the best thing I think you can do (I'm planning to do it once I get to the bank) is cut it up. It's too easy to get money these days. Going to the bank (at least for me) is a pain in the ass, out of the way, and due to my working hours, I can only go twice a week. If you make it inconvient for yourself to get money, you won't be as tempted to spend it. And when you do, get only big bills...you'll be less likely to break them to buy little things, like coffee or magazines or whatnot (which a lot of people, myself included, usually forget they even buy).
I'm no financial advisor, but that's just what I'm planning to do. If it helps you in any way, good.

Rabble, here you can use atm cards for everything.
I barely use cash anymore. Most places take debit cards.
It doesn't cost me anything to use it, and I like it cause I can track my purchases.
I only take things back if I don't use them. Like, right now I have about $60. worth of paint and sandpaper for a project i was going to do, and haven't gotten around to. I can return it to Home Depot and use that money. If I decide to do the project, I can always go get the stuff again.

The thing with me is that, in the past, if I am in a store and have $20 I have no problem with spending it because I can get more easily. The fact that I can't find my ATM card now means that now I have to think if I'll need that $20 later for gas or food.
I actualy know where it is, it is in a box of stuff from when I last moved, but I am holding off on retreving it.

I agree with cutting up the atm card....its just too easy to withdraw cash. I take out a set amount of cash from my paycheck and it has to last until the next payday. ( I use cash only for entertainment) So if I don't have cash I sit at home and watch TV.

inky, you're a doll...but i HATE people like you.
a retail store is not a pawnshop or a bank. when people return stuff, my numbers go down, both cash and UPT (units per transaction). i have to scramble to make up that lost amount, or face explaining to my boss why i didn't make plan.
i can't stand people who buy stuff at the spur of the moment, only to return it. do you have any idea how much paperwork there is on my part for a return?
i understand that you think it's your right to return something when you don't use it. but after six months? i would laugh in your face. a return policy is not set in stone, and i don't allow people to abuse it in my store. returning items is a matter of consideration on the store's part. we don't have to return anything, unless you can prove that there is a defect in the product. can you return a car just because you didn't like the color?
sorry that i unloaded on you. but i can't stand that frame of mind- think about the people who work there that have to go through all of that trouble because you can't make up your mind. retail is a SERVICE industry, not a SERVANT industry.
