Long Island mother put glue in her 9-year-old daughter's eye yesterday after mistaking a bottle of liquid cement for the girl's eye drops, police said.
The Massapequa mom was rushing to give the girl her pinkeye medicine before school when she grabbed a tiny green bottle of Super Nail Glue sitting near the front door.
"It's a scary thing," the mom told WCBS-TV, holding the real eyedropper. "I could have blinded my own girl because [the medicine and the glue] look so much alike."
Minutes later, the girl was flown in a police helicopter to Nassau University Medical Center for emergency treatment.
Doctors bathed the girl's left eye in saline solution for about 30 minutes and flushed out the glue. She was treated with antibiotics and sent home.
"Luckily, there was no damage" to the eye, said hospital spokeswoman Shelley Lotenberg.
The mother asked authorities not to release her or her daughter's names.
Emergency room doctors say they regularly see eye injuries involving mixups between glue and eyedrops.
Many types of glue are packaged in tiny clear plastic bottles that are almost identical to eyedroppers, doctors said.
Dr. Richard Bagdonas, the attending emergency room surgeon at the hospital, said families should keep glue as far away from medicine as possible.
"Keep Crazy Glue with the hardware in the house and medicines in a separate area," he said.
Anyone who gets glue or other dangerous liquids in their eyes should use saline solution to flush it out.
Police called the incident an accident and said no charges are expected.
