Exclamation Paean!

Paean is one of those words. Whenever I hear it, I get all giddy. Whenever someone uses it in their speech, I get really happy. I love seeing it in print in major publications, as well. I noticed it today in an article I was reading in one of the weekly rags from back home. Why do I get all happy? I suppose because it's one of those very unused words and that I'm a bit of a nasty, dirty logophile. So, here's my question to you: Do you have a word or words that make you feel all happy and giddy and junk? Or, is this simply something else to add to the long list of things that make me weird?

"plethora" and "frock" were the first ones to spring to mind.
I am sad to say I have never used "paean" in my life.
Ah well.

Paean is pronounced like pee-an with a short a in the 'an' part. It's derived from a praise that was sung to Apollo, I believe. Basically, it means to highly praise someone. Most often, I've seen it used in a sarcastic manner (i.e. Oh, the students did so well on failing their tests that I shall offer them up a paean.).

"hubris" always sort of shook me up. Another one is "tendentious" whish is an excellent argument ender.

Ahh, yes, hubris. That is also one! Last year, when I was teaching Othello to my senior class, I think I may have over-used it simply to compensate for the fact that I've only heard about three people say it ever, two of which were my university instructors. Oxsan gets another :+: from me.

Isn't that just spanish for "pride"? I'm curious as to why it shook you up.
