Fuck this shit, I'm leaving!
... ohio
maybe.
I've been thinking about it more and more. I have lived here my entire life... Hell you kids know I've posted about this before.
Here's my situation
I have no saved funds, (ie, no money), my own car, some ok furniture, and my computer. My lease is up in june (not that I have to plan to leave the state by june, but it's something to note).
I want to live in a beautiful place that doesn't smell like ass, and has a decent community that I can thrive on.
but where?
as far as when, I dunno. we shall see how things go. Right now though I was thinkin that perhaps I should stay here at least one more year.
also, I have never lived outside of the city I was born in, so I have NO experience with this.
what are your thoughts?

from someone who has just picked up and moved to different states...four times in her life, my personal advice:
1. get some money together, and don't touch it for anything. you'll need an emergency fund. trust me. or you'll be calling your mom, crying in the rain on some street corner in a city you've only been in for two months and some fat guy will be staring at your ass the whole time, and...uh...
2. do what you're doing now: network. get some ideas of where you want to go, and visit with people you know, so you can get a feel for the place before you just pack all your shit in the car and take off into the sunset. it's also really good to know people wherever you're moving. yeah, mooching off of people sucks, but it's nice to know someone's phone number when it's three in the morning and you need bail.
3. make up a resume, and take it with you when you go to visit people in other states. don't just look for local culture- look at the cost of living. visit the grocery store, the car lots, and read a few papers to see what the community offers in the job market. pass out your resume to every place in town that you would be remotely interested in. check the want ads to see how much rent is in that area.
4. did i mention having a nest egg? do it, seriously. have at least a thousand dollars before leaving everything you know for an uncertain future. do people just take off recklessly and end up leading happy, successful lives? yes. does it happen often? fuck no.
5. get two or three part time jobs. forget having a social life for a few months, and just collect paychecks. sacrifice 90 days of pleasure for 900 dollars in the bank. yes, i know i'm getting redundant with the money thing, but it's important!
that's all i can think of right now, except for being careful of who you trust on the internet...don't accept any favors from any trans am driving gun wielding libertarians, ok?

You don't seem to have anything to lose by doing it.
Unless you wind up in some secluded forest as the centerpiece for a cult sacrifice.

Fuck it. Do it.
I moved Islands less than 48 hours after deciding I hated Auckland (although I did move somewhere where you can pick up a job in five minutes) - and I have never regretted it.
As for your furniture - decide how much you really want it because getting a truck to haul interisland (and I would assume interstate in your case) is way too expensive - buy *new* second hand stuff when you get there - and selling the stuff you have at the moment will give you some spare cash.
And if any trans-am driving, gun toting libertarians offer you help, take their money and give them a false address .

Well, come to Iowa. I say this because I'm lonely, and I need someone interesting to hang with.

I agree with Morganna. Put together some cash.
Look at the job market. It is much easier to move somewhere that has a job waiting for you. There are online job markets you can search for employment on.
I know you are adverse to doing illustration work but it is good boilerplate practice to keep your eye and hand sharp. You have a decent portfolio there and is your best chance at a job that pays well.
You might think about The SanFransisco Bay area. There is a great deal of artwork being done there and the piercing and tatt business is booming. Look for a corporate art position and aprentice at a tatt shop on weekends. Palm Springs is also a good spot here in CA but it get's frigging hot in the summer.
I am planning to buy a house this summer. Maybe you could use my place as a base of operations (must clear this with my wife of course). I am within 5 hours drive of SanDiego, LA, Vegas, and the Bay area.
Sooooo if you are shooting for the left coast, maybe I could give you a hand.
(I'm a libertarian but I drive a pickup).

Get a bunch of money together, pack up your shit, and move.
I'm still not clear on why you have such a hard time with this concept, Sara.
It REALLY IS that easy.
Fuck, I've picked up and moved more times than I can count.
All the rest of the advice was pretty good tho, I'm just still not entirely sure that anything is stopping you from moving but some sort of strange fear of success or something.

Come to Colorado Springs Sara. I'll tell you why.
This area inspired the song "America the Beautful", there a few places that can compare with the natural beauty that is here.
This city is not overly large, but Denver is a big city and only an hour drive from here if you want some big city fun. It does not smell like ass, though the lack of oxygen takes a few weeks of getting used to, but you are not a smoker, so you won't be as bad off as some. The local economy has survived better than most and people are friendly. Plus, you know someone here. Maybe I'm biased, but I think this town fucking rules. I might even be able to hook you up with a job, I know people around here.

Bella is right. If you move to that area, move to northern Virginia.
They also hire for all levels of skill.
When I was initially looking for a job, I got a lot of job offers from there.
I dont want to move and northern Va is a good 4 hours or so away from me, though. So, I couldn't take any of them.
There's a fair amount of IT jobs around this area, as well. Also, graphic arts jobs. This area is a little more picky about your skill level, though(Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Williamsburg).
Virginia Beach and Chesapeake seem to be hiring the most for this area.
