A car bomb near the United States embassy in the Peruvian capital, Lima, has killed at least four people and wounded many others, according to police and local media. There has been no immediate information on who planted the device. The US State Department in Washington was not immediately able to confirm the reports.

The blast comes just three days before President George W Bush arrives in Lima as part of a South American tour.

There was also an earlier bomb in Lima today, a small backpack bomb at a telco office. The second bomb was in a car in front of a bank building directly across the street from the US Embassy. The second bomb is reported to have killed 4 (BBC) or 8 (Reuters).
