Will PETA cry about this as well?

Scientists will try to grow meat.

Thumbs down

"After washing the chunks in alcohol, they immersed them in a vat of fetal bovine serum, a nutrient-rich liquid extracted from the blood of unborn calves, which biologists usually use for growing cells in the lab."

From a guy who is amazed that someone came up with the idea of a sandwich, piled with sliced meat and sauce (ie:Arby's!), I am in awe of these brilliant men and women. Can you say Noble Prize in Science??

I had a buddy a few years back who worked at the packing plant in Hereford, TX. He said that if you saw what he saw, you wouldn't eat at Arby's ever again.

The average scientist is pretty well suited for growing meat, not much else. If this works we could do without Democrats altogether!

If they weren't fucking scientists they would probably have planted a few carrots and be done with it.

As it is they have to justify themselves and their wages.

I prefer to chase the animal down and rip out its throat with my teeth while I hold it down myself.

His comments about the packing plant dealt with the condition of the animals set aside for purchase by Arby's representatives. They were not much different from the diseased and malnourished animals chosen for pet food.

This seems like an appropriate thread in which to ask this question....

I just read about a nineteenth-century circus owner who included a rhino in his animal menagerie. As he travelled, he would allow town mayors to shoot(!) the rhino with a gun--demonstrating the thickness of the beast's skin!

Oh, CAL, is this possible?

What a crock. Test tube meat takes all the fun out of being a carnivore. You don't get to kill the animal or partake in the joys of gutting the beast, or cutting your own slabs of steak. And furthermore, the term "fetal bovine serum" makes me cringe. I'd rather eat raw liver that eat somethig grown in that.

Anything that requires the blood of unborn calves probably requires chicken sacrifices in conjuction with a full moon. PETA would frown.

Also, I don't know what the problem is. I can grow my meat by over 50% several times a day. It's quite uncontrollable tho.

Heheheh! I've been through Hereford. Feedlot city. Smella cowshit is so strong, it takes yer breath away.

I worked at Arbys many years ago. Much about it has changed since then. Regardless, back when I was there, the "roast" was a 10-lb. loaf of processed beef called a "cornet roast", if my memory serves me correctly. As it was explained to me, the cornet roast consisted of all the remaining meat scrapings from the skeleton of the butchered animal. We had to be sure and cook the meat for approximately 3 hours; otherwise, it had a curious odor. Additionally, the meat was sliced almost paper-thin (as it is, now) because it would have a rubber-like texture if it wasn't.

I ate 'em, anyway.

Amen.

I heard that eating to much processed meat increases ones chance of developing diabetes, especaily in males. Hot dogs were the main culprits.

My Dad drove a truck hauling away the "left-overs" from one of those places when I was a kid. Probably the same one if it was about 26 years ago. I sorta grew up there..and Irving too. Most of my Dad's family is from there, Canyon , and down near Lubbock.

I have to agree, a tour through there at the age of about 4, I guess, is really not what a young mind needs to see.

"Meat" Derived By Advanced Meat Bone Separation and Meat Recovery Systems
The definition of "meat" was amended in December 1994 to include any "meat" product that is produced by advanced meat/bone separation machinery. This meat is comparable in appearance, texture, and composition to meat trimmings and similar meat products derived by hand. This new machinery separates meat from bone by scraping, shaving, or pressing the meat from the bone without breaking or grinding the bone. Product produced by advanced meat recovery (AMR) machinery can be labeled using terms associated with hand-deboned product (e.g., "beef trimmings" and "ground beef").

The AMR machinery cannot grind, crush, or pulverize bones to remove edible meat tissue, and bones must emerge essentially intact. The meat produced in this manner can contain no more than 150 milligrams (mg) of calcium per 100 grams product (within a tolerance of 30 mg. of calcium). Products that exceed the calcium content limit must be labeled "mechanically separated beef or pork" in the ingredients statement.

Mechanically Separated Meat (MSM)
Mechanically Separated Meat (MSM) is a paste-like and batter-like meat product produced by forcing beef or pork bones, with attached edible meat, under high pressure through a sieve or similar device to separate the bone from the edible meat tissue. Mechanically separated meat has been used in certain meat and meat products since the late 1970's.

In 1982, a final rule published by FSIS on mechanically separated meat said it was safe and established a standard of identity for the food product. Some restrictions were made on how much can be used and the type of products in which it can be used. This restrictions were based on concerns for limited intake of certain components in MSM like calcium. Mechanically separated meat must be labeled as "mechanically separated beef or pork" in the ingredients statement. Hot dogs can contain no more than 20% mechanically separated beef or pork.

Mechanically Separated Poultry (MSP)
Mechanically Separated Poultry (MSP) is a paste-like and batter-like poultry product produced by forcing bones, with attached edible tissue, through a sieve or similar device under high pressure to separate bone from the edible tissue. Mechanically separated poultry has been used in poultry products since the late 1960's. In 1995, a final rule on mechanically separated poultry said it was safe and could be used without restrictions. However, it must be labeled as "mechanically separated chicken or turkey" in the product's ingredients statement. The final rule became effective November 4, 1996. Hot dogs can contain any amount of mechanically separated chicken or turkey.
