what is the purpose of changing your nickname? i'm being serious. some of you have changed your name recently, and i would like to know exactly why you would want to wipe out your past history as a poster here and appear to be a newer member. i mean, most of you announce that you're doing it, but after a week or so, new members would have no idea of who you used to be, unless it was pointed out to them.

so spill: why post under an alt, or change your nick altogether?

That is, I don't think any people have really left and had the chance to do that.

I can say I posted under an alt myself to promote the crippled page in a fun way. (spoke about that earlier in IRC)

I explained my reasons to most of the people that went to Philly. Spooky was not I, it was a mutation of me and was nothing more than a social experiment on my part in a particpatory observational way. I was interested in the link between identity politics and internet communities. That was the main reason I started posting on forums in the first place, and Spooky just happened to be a name I came with up and stuck with. But the experiment as I saw it came to and end. And I learnt alot I think about the way idenitity is shaped through interaction with others etc etc. I have quite a few notes on it at home actually ready for writing out the dissertation if I ever manage to pay the Uni for the right to do it

i admit that the bruce thread was what reminded me of it. but euphorbia/hell/atom_bomb's war thread got me thinkin' of it as well. i mean, anyone reading that thread would have had no idea who hell was, because that nick isn't used by her anymore. at least half of our regular posters now have never seen her use that name.

i'm curious as to why there seems to be a trend of it lately, and why people have done it in the past.

well like I say Morgana, I did not do it for the purposes of a trend. When I did it, it just happened to be that it came quite soon after aminal did it, and so I can see why it looked like a trend, but I had been considering ending it all as it were before Christmas, but just didnt get around to it.

edit: also, as much as some people might not want to believe it, Spooky is absolutely nothing like me, and his opinions are not mine either. I think in the beginning they used to be, but it soon started to morph and change.

I just simply get bored of my handles too fast. I mean you think me changing my username on this forum once is bad, you should see how often i change my nick on IRC...it's just so easy...need...change....name...

But you're right, it's more confusing at forums because on IRC, at least you can still identify someone by their hostmask. Unless they change that too.....

Spooky was a cool nick. Phil, well...not that I have any right to call someone's nick lame. I've always stuck with mine even though it has to rank up there with one of the worst handles at the Asylum. Its just stuck and there is a little history in my mind about it. I go by D_I in chat and other forums, it still identifies me but dosent look quite as negative.

Phil, admit it, Spooky is the real you. Phil is the experiment.

phil- my perception is, of course, my opinion, and is subjective. i totally realize that.

but you should also realize that by changing your nick, as well as suddenly changing your behavior style with other members, it leads others to feel that you're just trying to shed your past in order to start afresh. personally, i look upon it as a copout. even if what you're saying about your "spooky" nick is correct, which i feel is a little thin, i still look at the fact that you're disowning every piece of yourself that you did allow to show through with that nick. how many of "spooky" 's opinions are your own? how many of that nick's replies were kneejerk reactions that you couldn't contain?

your posting style is the same. you use the same grammatical style. you posit questions the same. you approach debate the same. yes, you've toned down your debating technique, and yes, you don't flame euphorbia anymore. but besides that...can you explain to me what the difference is? because
