(CRICKET) Test ace Ben Hollioake is killed
England cricketer Ben Hollioake has been killed in a car crash in Australia. He was driving a black Porsche 924 car which came off the road in the early hours of Saturday morning (1600 Friday GMT) in Perth, Western Australia.
Hollioake reportedly lost control of the Porsche as it came off a ramp on an expressway in the south of the city and the sports car hit a wall.
A 20-year-old female passenger is fighting for her life in a Perth hospital with serious head and chest injuries.
Inspector Greg Medhurst of Western Australia Police said: "The vehicle - a black 924 - spun out of control and hit a brick wall.
"There was no other vehicle involved.
"He died at the scene. The female passenger has head and chest injuries and has been taken to Royal Perth hospital.
"We will carry out a full investigation into the cause of the crash. I'm not aware of any suggestion that alcohol played a part."
Relatives travelling in a separate vehicle were first on the scene after witnessing the crash that claimed Hollioake's life, police said.
Police would not confirm who the relatives were.
England's cricket side, currently playing New Zealand in the second Test in Wellington, were made aware of Hollioake's death at the lunch interval.
They requested that the England flag be lowered to half-mast during the lunch break.
Captain Nasser Hussain and Surrey colleague Mark Ramprakash emerged after the break to continue batting sporting black arm bands.
The 24-year-old Surrey all-rounder was born in Australia but moved to Britain from Perth in 1984. Hollioake played two Tests for England - against Australia in 1997 and Sri Lanka in 1998.
He is the younger brother of Adam Hollioake, who has also played for England.
The elder Hollioake issued a statement saying that his family wa "totally devastated at our tragic loss".
Ben Hollioake was visiting his parents in Perth after playing for England in one-day matches in New Zealand.
He played 20 one-day internationals, scoring 309 runs and taking eight wickets.
Hollioake is the second Surrey player to die in a car crash in recent years, following Graham Kersey's similar accident near Brisbane in December 1996.
Ironically, that death led to Ben's brother Adam, as captain, dedicating Surrey's Benson and Hedges final success the following summer to their late wicketkeeper.
