Donnie Darko

Coolest movie I've seen in a long time. Equal parts drama, comedy, sci-fi, horror, suspense, and social commentary. The acting, writing, story, effects, musical score and soundtrack, and cinematography were all great. I would definitely recommend it to you. It was in limited cinema release, which I believe because it's such an offbeat movie, but if you like offbeat movies you'd probably love this. Just came out on rental a few weeks ago so you should be able to grab a copy.

If you don't know what it's about, here's a little plot synopsis. Donnie Darko lives in a small conservative Republican town in 1988, just before the Bush/Dukakis elections. Donnie is plagued with mental problems, and has been placed in mental facilities before. He also suffers from a sleepwalking disorder, and is on daily medication. He begins seeing visions of a man in a large demonic bunny suit named Frank, telling him that the end of the world is coming in 28 days. While he's out sleepwalking, a jet engine with apparently no origin mysteriously falls on his house, directly into his bedroom where he should have been sleeping. The next 28 days are spent with him trying to live his life normally, but he keeps seeing visions and doing whatever Frank tells him to, all the while reading a book about time travel by a 101 year old woman, to try and figure out why all this is happening to him.

It's very original, and very good. If you're into big popular Hollywood movies with the typical characters and endings, this might not be for you. But if you want something offbeat, a little weird, but very thought provoking, see this movie.

I saw it again yesterday and it was great this time too. At first I missed that you said something about the music in the movie but even though you mentioned it I must add that it is filled with great 80's music: Echo and the Bunnymen, Sisters of Mercy, and Gary Jules covers Tears for Fears song Mad World, imo one of the greatest covers ever.

It's sitting right next to me, a day late to the video store, still unwatched. Never heard of it before Saturday, rented it because it looked interesting.

Maybe I should keep it another day and watch it tomorrow night.

That is what I would have done if I were you. It's really a great movie, I give it two thumbs up, 5/5, 10.0 and so on.

Donnie Darko was a good one.
I loved the old lady, who looked strangely like David Bowie.

I need to get that Mad World cover.

Indeed, one of the greatest covers ever.

Here you go.

And agreed, the original was good, but this is fantastic.
