Donnie Darko
Coolest movie I've seen in a long time. Equal parts drama, comedy, sci-fi, horror, suspense, and social commentary. The acting, writing, story, effects, musical score and soundtrack, and cinematography were all great. I would definitely recommend it to you. It was in limited cinema release, which I believe because it's such an offbeat movie, but if you like offbeat movies you'd probably love this. Just came out on rental a few weeks ago so you should be able to grab a copy.
If you don't know what it's about, here's a little plot synopsis. Donnie Darko lives in a small conservative Republican town in 1988, just before the Bush/Dukakis elections. Donnie is plagued with mental problems, and has been placed in mental facilities before. He also suffers from a sleepwalking disorder, and is on daily medication. He begins seeing visions of a man in a large demonic bunny suit named Frank, telling him that the end of the world is coming in 28 days. While he's out sleepwalking, a jet engine with apparently no origin mysteriously falls on his house, directly into his bedroom where he should have been sleeping. The next 28 days are spent with him trying to live his life normally, but he keeps seeing visions and doing whatever Frank tells him to, all the while reading a book about time travel by a 101 year old woman, to try and figure out why all this is happening to him.
It's very original, and very good. If you're into big popular Hollywood movies with the typical characters and endings, this might not be for you. But if you want something offbeat, a little weird, but very thought provoking, see this movie.
