"Salman the Solitary" by Yasar Kemal.

A great book. It tells the story of how Ismail Aga, fleeing from Russian troops, finds an abandoned boy named Salman and later adopts him. Salman idolizes Ismail who raises Salman as his own son. After some time Ismails wife gets pregnant and gives birth to Mustafa. All of a sudden Salman is no longer the most favoured one but this new baby is. Salman reacts to this through an even more obsessive devotion to his foster father. In the same time he starts to feel hatred against Mustafa who has taken his place as the most favoured son.

Melville's "Moby Dick". Probably the greatest book in all of American Literature, but definitely an acquired taste.

Graham Greene's novels.

I think you would absolutely devour the short stories of Ambrose Bierce. He wrote a great deal about the Civil War, and he was purportedly assasinated by the order of Pancho Villa in 1914. Very interesting journalist/writer.

Good Bones - Margaret Atwood. It's full of cynicism and laughs at political correctness. It is a book of short stories, only a few pages of each, which is great for public transportation reads, or breaks at work. The best part is that even if you don't like one story, you're BOUND to like another. It's a tad heavy on feminism at times, but it's still a WONDERFUL read. I have read each story at least twice.

Not wanted on the Voyage - Timothy Findley: It's a satyre. Think of a corrupt Noah's Ark.

Not like that. I mean REALLY corrupt.

Anything by Sark is pretty fun to read as well. She's more inspirational than anything else. Think Fun Self-Help Book.

The Midwich Cuckoos - John Wyndham: It's an oldie, but a goodie. I liked it, at least. It's a cross between sci-fi and horror, I would say... not unlike the twilight zone. And don't watch the movies. Not the original or the village of the damned. They just suck.

Just hit me: "Rush Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot" by Al Franken. One of the funniest books I have ever read.

Also, you should read some of Douglas Adams' books. Pretty funny, especially when he dedicates an entire chapter of one book to solo-sex.

Indeedily. In the newest book (that I've read) Richard turns Jigang's home town against him with something as simple as a statue. Terry Goodkind is one of the best writers I have ever read.

Also, add Robert Jordan's "Eye of the World." Book one of the Wheel of Time series.

internet gaming associations perenial pot-luck...

"We Wish to Inform you that Tomorrow we will be Killed with our Families" - Phillip Gourevitch. About Rwandan genocide. Not along the lines of the books that you mentioned, although it's quite good.

"Jaques the Fatalist" - Denis Diderot. Interesting.

"The Third Policeman" - Flann O'Brien. Really fucking good. Quick read.

You're honestly the first person I've come across who has ever read this book.

(I posted it in the Book Club to no avail)

A TREMENDOUS read. I still own a copy, and I own VERY few books. Tay John, for instance, is the only other novel I can think of by a Canadian that I have (save Cohen).

If you are at all interested in Christian mythology, biting satire, and many other things, check it out.

I nabbed this descriptor from online.

Findley, Timothy
Toronto: Viking, 1984.

This retelling of the story of Noah's Ark presents Noah as a tyrant, gives the Ark a concentration camp atmosphere, delivers Lucifer in drag and casts Mrs. Noah and a blind cat in the main roles.

Not Wanted on the Voyage is the story of the great flood and the first time the world ended, filed with an extraordinary cast of remarkable characters. With pathos and pageantry, desperation and hope, magic and mythology, this acclaimed novel weaves its unforgettable spell.

"A dazzling, heartbreaking piece of literary alchemy." — Newsday

"An impassioned fable...His prose rises to heights of astonishing brilliance, with moments of great beauty and pathos."
— The Times Literary Supplement

"Beautiful writing and extraordinary invention...filled with surprises, fright and suspense." — Chicago Tribune

"It is one of those rare books that provide delight and surprise and sometimes a shock on every page."
— The Gazette (Montreal)

"Probably my favorite book that I read last year."

You like action spy books?

For awhile I went crazy buying and reading every book the David Morrel wrote. You might know him as the guy who wrote "First Blood" now known as "RAMBO" , Morrel really has a nack for these type of books and quite a few of them have become movies.
My pick put of them all is problay "BrotherHood of the Rose" or "The Fifth Profession".

Or get a good comedy book. As said above Terry Pratchett co-wrote a book called "Good Omens" which is a great dark comedy about Armagedon.

And if you like the girly stuff (it took me a long time to read myself) try out Tom Robbins "Skinny Legs and All" , he likes to write about strange women.

I could give more but I'm sure thats tons for now

Iain Banks - his straight fiction is good. He also does Sci Fi as Iain M Banks. Of the sci fi stuff, I'd recommend: Feersum Endjinn, Against a Dark Background and Use of Weapons. Straight fiction recommends: The Wasp Factory, Canal Dreams and Walking on Glass.

Raymond E. Feist - Empire trilogy is a very good read. I normally cannot stand Janny Wurts, but Feist seems to make up for her shortfalls in this series

Alastair Reynolds - Fairly new sci-fi author, but he has lots of potential. Revelation Space and Chasm City are excellent reads.

Other random books: Wheelers(by Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen) is a fairly entertaining read. Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson is a *very* good read, but I suspect is somewhat limited in audience. Snow Crash is also highly recommended if you're into cyberpunk fiction. And you cannot speak of cyberpunk without mentioning the grandaddy of the genre, William Gibson. Idoru is a good starter if you're interested in Mr. Gibson's work.

I used to love Adam Hall's spy books when I was 15-16. I really need to pick one up again and re-read it.

Might prove difficult though. According to Amazon 90% of his books appear to be out of print.

'The Watchers' - Dean Koontz

I really dislike the horror genre, especially stephen king, but this book is very very good.
