Short stories

Recommend some good authors or books please.

Atwood and Poe are my two favorites so far.

I used to read a lot of Indian Folklore when I was about ten. I guess it was my version of Aesop's fables. I was a weird kid.

there's a collection of stories by neil gaiman called smoke and mirrors. that book is fabulous, dearie.

the first story in the book is about an old woman who finds the holy grail in her local thrift shop. sir galahad shows up on a white horse to retrieve it, and thus set the souls of all the searching knights to rest, but she refuses him, saying that it looks too good on her mantle.

then there's a story about a man who thinks that he wants to get someone killed. so he calls these people he finds in the phone book, and they tell him a price. it's a little too high for him, but then they tell him if he wants two people done, they have a special. so he has to think of two people and call them back. they then tell him that the special has changed- if he gets five people done, it's even cheaper. and so it goes...

he's a modern day fairytale master.

Nikolay Gogol
Aleksandr Pushkin
Anton Chekhov

I especially recommend Chekhov. Gogol should be interesting as well, almost every russian knows his work and many can qoute long passages from his work. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean that it's good but it should atleast be interesting.

the girl in the flammable skirt, by aimee bender

i just love this book. i've never quite read anything like it. there's a story about a mermaid, a story about a girl whose hand is made of ice, it's.... like modern fairytalish surrealism. it's really hard to describe. her prose is beautiful. read it.

trench town twat tickle...

I've got some suggestions, although I'm not sure that they're what you're looking for

Kafka: The Complete Short Stories

Beckett: The Complete Short Prose

Modern?

Try:

The KGB Bar Reader - This has got some excellent modern fiction inside

Speaking with the Angel - More delicious modern fiction. Dave Eggers contributed and it's tasty.

edit - I'm not sure what happened? My tongue just fell off...
