Most influential band in the last 50 years. According to the NME
New Musical Express's 50 year anniversary has seen them name the most infulential band in music in the past 50 years.
And the winner! THE SMITHS
The list takes into account: Appearances on front covers. Volume and significance of features. Dominance of end of year writers polls. The response from readers in the weekly letters page. The presence of their name and influence in the paper (e.g. the number of acts referred to as the new them, the endless questioning of other artists for their opinions of them, the terrible pun headlines on their name or song titles...). And the speed with which they took over.
It was felt that The Smiths and then a solo Morrissey's all-encompassing spread through the 80s and early 90s allowed them to reign.
The top 10 is as follows:
1: The Smiths
2: The Beatles
3: Stone Roses
4: David Bowie
5: Sex Pistols
6: Oasis
7: Radiohead
8: Paul Weller/The Jam
9: U2
10: Public Enemy

Led Zepplin should be in there ... can't believe theyre not .. and I always hate the inclusion of the Stone Roses .. way overrated interms of music journo's perceptions of their influence .. take them out, put them in the top 20 maybe and replace them in the top 10 with Led Zep

this is about the NME, not the world. Led Zepplin didnt have much influence in the NME.

Shush! ...
hrmmpf .. thanks for highlighting my inability to scan read at speed accurately ..
*pouts*
still think the stone roses are way over rated though
*shuffles off chuntering*
EDIT: just listening to mark n' lard on R1 discussing the same thing and they jumped to the same conclusion .... highlighting the ludicrousy of The Stokes one place ahead (or infront of .. I cant remember) The Rolling Stones .. at No18 ..
they also quite rightly pointed out that there must be an international media conspiracy against the Shirehorses, 'cos they werent on the list ...

NME looking no further than its own backyard?

David Bowie isn't a band, but should stay on the list anyway.
Stone Roses?

I can't undertand this obessesion people have with the Smiths. The only interesting thing ever done was when Morrissey humped that rock in that one video. He has one hell of an annoying voice and should have his vocal cords severed. The Cure is far superior to the Smiths and Morrissey.

They're not goth. They never claimed to be. They have always, in fact, detested being called such. They used to hang out in goth clubs because they got in for free. If you listen to their music, it's not "goth" at all. And they recently released a Greatest Hits album in October which had two new songs on it. They are not gone.

Robert Smith did use to play guitar in Siouxsie and the Banshees periodically in their beginning ... so it's easy to see where the goth correlation comes in ... and also his own personal look is kinda gothy ... I love him though ... he fucking rocks ... but I dont think the Cure are goth.
Not sure about them being "superior" to the Smiths though ... the number of songwriters/bands who actually claim to be influenced by the Smiths far outweighs those saying the same about the Cure as far as I can tell

(adores Cure)
(thinks Smiths are dullish)
I checked out NME directly. They said *artists* not bands.
In which case, many more questions arise?
(counts back 50 years)
Bowie's got a new album coming out this summer. New material. With Tony Visconti. Cover photo is lubberly.

I take it you've never read NME...
The Smiths? Wtf? Not a big fan, but jeez, when I think of influence, they sure don't come to mind...

Good thing it's back up. I'd hate for you to become the next goatse.cx man if it was your regular supply...
What is up with NME's anti-american stance? As if the UK doesn't churn out as much shit as we do...

Also, why do they claim the list to include the last 50 years of music, when the Beatles are the oldest on there by far....?

Robert Smith's supposed to cut his hair sometime soon. His wife is making him. I remember way back around the time of "Hot, Hot, Hot" when he cut his hair. It didn't look terrible. Of course, he's in his 40's now and the drugs have taken their toll...I'm surprised he's not dead, quite frankly. Hmm, where is me mate plickfu in these times (He adores Robert Smith and The Cure...if plickfu were a gay homo, he'd be all over Robert Smith's jock)? He has more info on this.

i was waiting for paint to point them out.
i dont understand why they are in that list either. the tragic thing about oasis is that noel gallagher is not very educated - if he was he would be a brilliant lyricist.
instead, he only has a limited vocabulary to work from. add to that, the fact that he steals riffs left right and center (their current single is very similar to a stereophonics track).
but......BUT.....their debut album was stunning and it was influential. at the time the UK scene was shit. very much like it is now - pop bands and the like dominated. 'Suede' were making an impact, but Oasis - via word of mouth - stormed the airwaves.
you might percive this as a bad thing (i mean who admits to likeing oasis?) but that first album fucking rocked. really, it did. it was more or less down hill from there.
shame really, cause they always show glimpses of great rock. take 'gas panic' from their last album. i've heard stuff from their forthcoming longplay - and its actually - shock horror - quite good. though their single, is very much mid-90's.

to accuse Oasis of ripping people off by highlighting a lift from a Stereophonics track strikes me as highly ironic!
