We should move the arguments about Tool here....

You either hate or love Tool. I really hate them, I think they're mediocre at best, and they're so full of themselves. When I saw a commercial for Lateralus, and went to school and saw about 10 or 20 people with Tool shirts, that pretty much did it for me. And like I said, Tool is mediocre, I didnt say they're horrible. I used to listen to Aenima every day after walking home from school, but then again, that was back when I liked Metallica, until they tried to sue me. Anyways, I just think theres better. And dont even bring A Perfect Circle into the Tool thread. A Perfect Circle isnt Tool. Theres only one person from Tool in it, and if you say that means Maynard = Tool, then I am indeed correct. They are full of themselves. Anyways, flame away, rabid bastards.

I would say Tool is more on the side of attempting to create more and more hype for their albums and products. The long await for Lateralus made me want to weep, it was that bad. And now they're waiting ten long years...just to try and do a reunion show. That's the silliest thing I have ever heard. No one will care about them by then. I mean, come on...compared to AEnima, Lateralus is just generic. They've gone downhill, they know they have, and they've gone into hiding for a decade. Get over it. And as for A Perfect Circle, it was good because Maynard didn't write any of the music! If he had his way, it would have sucked also. And everyone seems to be screaming "Tapeworm is soon!"...Tapeworm has been around for a while. Most of the tracks have been recorded, they're probably just lying in Reznor's closet with the rest of his crack.

just a few points here...

it's one thing to not like the music that an artist makes. music is a very interpretive experience, and some music just doesn't reach us the way other music does. and that's cool.

but to say that one of the reasons you don't like a band is because too many people wear their shirts is childish and smells of the selfsame elitism you claim the band has.

i like music for music's sake. i don't care if the band has 50 fans or 50,000 fans. it doesn't change the sound coming out of my speaker.

and the lone bard: you mean to tell me that the band is trying to sell cd's? man, what the fuck is this world coming to? of course they're hyping their music. any musician that says that they're not hyping themselves is a liar. you have to promote yourself to get heard.

last note on this subject...

you can say what you want about tool's music, and that's fine. again, your opinion and all that. but if you took the time to read some of the interviews with the band members, read the inserts to the cd's, and listen to the songs, you'd understand that tool is more honest about their self-promotion and portrayal than alot of bands out there. they're completely up front about what they're trying to do- make music and make money.

tool has obsessive fans...so does tori amos, britney spears, trent reznor, ricki martin, and a hundred other people. you want to talk obsessive? talk about madonna's fans. she's had to file over 30 restraining orders in the past fifteen years, two of which were served to people who had attempted to break into her house.

Tool ain't special. I don't dislike them because they have lots of fans. I just dislike them because I really don't like their 'style' of music and in my 26 years on this planet I have seen bands/artists come and go, and Tool are just another one of those bands/artists. I doubt they're longivity. They are not Bowie, Floyd, U2, Madonna, Prince, Tony Bennett, Ozzy Osbourne, Aerosmith.... not yet at least. I don't think they will be around as long as any of those listed. On top of this, pj really likes them so its fun to say they are shit.

Tool is okay, if you like pretentious, artsy farts drug induced music.

I loved "Aenima," but "Lateralus" left a sour taste in my mouth. Maynard can sing, but at times his lyrics have as much complexity as the angsty goth teen poetry that forces itself upon the interwebnet.

I dunno. I like 'em, but at the same time I hate 'em.

I'm not one of the insane Tool fans that exists, though I do love their music. Go ahead, continue bashing them as if it will do any good whatsoever. To me their music is far above most of the crap in the mainstream nowadays in every aspect. To their fans it's great. I mean, look at some of the bands Phil listed. Pink Floyd put out 1 masterpiece, 2 great albums, and from the Wall on it wasn't very impressive at all. Bowie has put out lots of crap through the years along with some great albums. Madonna and Prince, whatever on that one. Ozzy, as good as he is, has never put out a masterpiece album. Aerosmith hasn't put out a new album since Pump, it's all sounded the same or worse.

All just my opinion. Bye bye.
