club or country ?

i'm shocked the likes of phil and smug would prefer to see their clubs achieve success above their country.

winning the world cup is by far more important than what any club team achieves.

but i must be in a minority to think so.

once the world cup starts, the buzz i get out of watching my country play and (hopefully win) is far greater than anything at club level.

I suppose we're caught in the excitement of the end-of-season run-in, with things very close. Attitudes will change as we get nearer to June.

When your club is as shit as mine (the Shrimpers), you always support your country first.

In football, I think that the team game is more important. Additionally, many clubs have a lot of foreign players, so the concept of 'english football' involves foreigners playing.

In cricket, however, the situation is different; test match and one day international cricket (ie, the international games) fund the county game, which to some extent is there to bring players on to keep the national side strong. As we are the only cricket playing nation of any merit in the EEC, the 'one foreign player' rule in county cricket has some considerable force, so English county cricket is, to a large extent, English.

My enthusiasm for the English cricket team eclipses all my other sporting enthusiasms (national and domestic) combined.

I hope somebody thoroughly embarrasses the US (hopefully in the range of 25-0). Then ESPN can stop pretending that people here actually care about soccer.

EDIT - beat the spelling Nazi's to it, but still may have spelled it wrong

that's "nazis", man. no '.
hockey: i watched canada the olympics. exciting, yes. i liked it. however, it's nowhere near as exciting as the playoffs. the stanley cup is what people dream of, the world cup (or the olympics) is practically an exhibition game. it's just not the same. has no national pride associated, no significance besides a vague international sense of hockey-superiority.

i'd disagree with the hocky statements if olympic hockey was still played how it used to be, amateurs. damn professionals ruined it for me. it was usually a much faster, more exciting, more physical game before it went to full pro...now it's just multiple all star teams playing in a big all star tourney instead of a single game.

hmm. i don't know. i think that when England play in the world cup the whole nation will be on the edge of their seats, thats a few million people, whereas Clubs are a much more personal thing. If your country wins then it is something you can celebrate with everyone, (unless your in London, coe their are more non-englsh people in London than anywhere else) whereas club sucess is only shared amongst club supporters. so i guess country, is more imporant although i prefer watching my club team play.

You obviously never saw the Canada Cup in the 80's. Far and away the best hockey I've ever seen. But you are correct BP, in my mind there is no better sport in the world than late round (conference finals and cup finals) NHL hockey. Un-matched intensity.

You know my hometown played the England side in a friendly back in 1988. I went to it. Aylesbury United versus England. We lost 7-0. But seeing Linekar, Shilton and basically the entire Euro 88 squad play in a shitty little ground that held less than a 1000 kicked arse.

If you are wodnering how a non-league club like Aylesbury managed to secure a freindly match against the England first team it was all down to our manager who had the surname 'Gould'.

thats my anecdote anyway.
