Cambodia may deport Gary Glitter
PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Disgraced glam rocker Gary Glitter may face deportation from Cambodia where he has been living for several months, Cambodian Minister of Women's Affairs Mu Sochua says. Glitter, 57, an icon of the 1970s British pop scene whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, was sentenced to four months in prison in 1999 after pleading guilty to 54 charges of child pornography.
He was discovered renting an apartment in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh by a tabloid journalists last weekend.
"He is not welcome here," Mu Sochua said.
"I will officially ask the British ambassador to release documents related to (Gadd's) case. If it (his conviction) is true, I will further request Prime Minister Hun Sen to deport him," she told Reuters by telephone.
"Cambodia is not a safe haven for people who have committed such crimes."
Glitter was arrested in Britain in November 1997 after a technician at a computer store discovered indecent images of young children while carrying out repairs to his computer.
Mu Sochua said there was no law to deport foreigners who had committed no crimes in the country, but the presence of some foreigners hurt the country's image.
"We don't need a law for this, its a moral issue," she said. "We have a lot of tourists, we do not need him."
Cambodia's weak judicial system and lax law enforcement has in recent years made the impoverished Southeast Asian country a haven for paedophiles and child sex tourists.
Lieutenant Colonel Pol Phithey, chief of Phnom Penh's Foreigner Police Department, said Gadd had committed no crimes in Cambodia but officers searched his apartment on Sunday and questioned him about his seven-month residency in the city.
"He (Gadd) failed to register as a foreigner living in Cambodia," Pol Phithey told Reuters by telephone.
"He was not arrested, but police ordered him to register now," he said. Pol Phithey said the ageing rocker had told police he was looking for a job in Cambodia.
