Sex Education with a twist...

Source: BBC news

Teacher displays porn during exam

Sixth formers at a leading independent school were exposed to pornographic images of women during a mock exam.
The students at Marlborough College in Wiltshire were part way through the AS-level exam when several looked up and noticed indecent pictures being relayed onto a large screen.

The invigilator, maths teacher Richard Jowett, appeared to have been looking at the material on his personal computer, forgetting it was linked up to the monitor.

In a statement, head teacher Edward Gould said: "Three weeks ago, while invigilating a practice examination for 17 pupils, Richard Jowett used the computer and entered a website for 13 minutes containing still photographs of naked adult women."

"The classroom monitor was on and some pupils saw these photographs.

"At the end of the examination, a pupil reported the incident to another member of the teaching staff.

"An investigation was held immediately - this included a full technical investigation and has led to disciplinary action being taken.

"Mr Jowett is currently on sick leave."

Mr Gould would not disclose whether Mr Jowett would be returning to the school and declined to answer any further questions.

Ah, gone are the days when a young boy learnt all about sex from his local priest.

Had to look up "invigilator" up at dictionary.com.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

invigilator

n : (British) someone who watches examination candidates to prevent cheating

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not in this case it seems.

During a particularly boring invigilation season (of mock exams), I drew up a numbered and lettered grid of all the desks in the hall. My colleague and I would then play 'invigilation battleships'; you make pupils you don't like part of your battleships and each player gets five consecutive goes. You stand near your guess, then the other rubs chin (no hit), scratches face (hit), straightens tie (sunk ship) or taps forehead (duplication).

You could get a whole game over in one invigilation session.

Two questions: What is a mock exam and what is it's purpose (if there is one other than the American meaning of fake)? And, if it really is a mock (pretend) exam, why on earth would people cheat on it?

To practice for real exams.

Mock exams are exams set for practice, usually about 3 months before the final exams. Only fools cheat on them, although some parents can be pretty hard on kids that do badly, some just like to fool themselves that it will somehow be OK in the end. The other reason to set them is to get the kids used to the very formal atmosphere in the final exams, which can freak some of them out (and some are prone to freaking out anyway, as the exams are really important).

You normally send a report home with the mock results and suggestions for improvements; at a lot of schools, there will be a parent's evening (parents come to see teachers, with the kids there too to hear it, at most schools) to discuss strategies for improving or maintaining grades.
