NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Abercrombie & Fitch, the retailer that has been criticized for sexually and racially provocative catalogs and designs, is under fire -- again.

Several consumer advocacy groups said they have sent e-mails to A&F to protest against the chain's latest offering of thong underwear in children's sizes with the words "eye candy" and "wink wink," printed on the front.

i don't see what the big fuss is about. they wouldn't make them if they weren't in demand.

i have mothers who come into my store with girls ages 9-13, and they buy them playboy thong underwear and other assorted styles all the time.

while i think it's fucking sick, it's the trend of the new generation of parents- "let my kids act however they want, just as long as i don't have to do anything about it."

I remember as a girl when I got my first little training bra and undies set, I felt really mature, I did not want to go have sex, but I did like feeling like a grown-up. And, seeing how most girls like playing dressup and love seeming as if they are older, I see the appeal of the "big-girl" undies. A thong is just another cut of underwear, some see it as sexier because it shows more skin, others for its comfort. Personally, I wear thongs because I find them more comfortable. On a slightly related topic, those fucking tshirts that say "flirt" "tease" "eyecandy" can be found in any girls department at almost any store. These underwear in my opinion are no different than the shirts, in fact I don't think they are as bad because who is going to see the thong of a 5 year old girl compared to who all sees a 5 year old in a "69" shirt. It is in the hands of the parents to decide what their daughters and sons wear if they are that young.
Children today are developing and being exposed to a lot more at an earlier age, this is just a side effect of a worlds gradual loss of childhood....

but it still just seems wrong to me.

I can't explain much beyond that. The whole concept makes me feel dirty. Course, so do those t-shirts unless a girl of consenting age is wearing them.

Regular panties are meant to just be underwear....but think about the purpose of thong panties....they're uncomfortable to wear, their only purpose is to look sexy. That's why it's sick for such young girls to want to wear them, if you ask me.
Morgana has a point, if they're in demand, it's probably the parents' fault for raising young girls to want to be skanky. But does it mean it's ok for A&F to be exploiting this?

Shyloh is 100% correct, although I'd add that it's not just the parents fault, but modern media and advertising techniques as well.

We're teaching young girls to be sexualized at an age where they don't know about sex and sexual power. This is pretty fucking disgusting and, if anyone actually believes that this is 'liberating' for young girls, well...

And not, of course, to say that media should censor themselves at all. I just think that this is one of the KEY reasons why there is no morality in capitalism and ANYONE who thinks the two belong together are insane.

Kiddie Thongs = BAD Idea

Kids don't have the best of hygene practices. They get enough skid marks on underwear that doesn't sit in their cracks. Hell, there are even some adults who aren't clean enough to be sporting thongs - I know because when I lived in my old studio I'd FREQUENTLY come across crusted-out panties in the hall way & on the stairs, dropped on the way to the laundry room.

Heh - I remember how much mommy freaked out the first time I requested plain panties sans printed flowers & unicorns... "You're not old enough to be wearing big-girl underwear, Heather..." I was 10 years old. The next year I wanted some black cotton panties and she wouldn't buy them for me because "black underwear is for whores". So I went down to Nordstrom and spent my entire months allowance on a tube (3 pair) of Black Jockey Bikini Briefs I carefully hand washed them and layed them under my bed to dry so as to not be found out. Well, she found them and tossed them in the wood stove. She did the same thing when she found a box of tampons in my dresser drawer. I was on the swim team, I really had no other choice.

I'd let my young daughter wear whatever kind of underwear she felt comfortable wearing. Naturally a kid isn't gonna feel cool in anything their peers aren't wearing too. The only time I would encourage thong use would be if for some reason the kid had to wear something panty lines looked tacky in - like a ballet leotard or leggings.

I just saw a report about casual oral sex between young teens. They estimated that 60% of kids under 15 had oral sex. "It's like French Kissing" a 13-year old said. The parents blamed the Starr Report, and said they had to answer a lot of embarrassing questions during that time.

What do you folks think? This shit wasn't around as much (or at least as openly) before the nightly news was talking nonstop about blowjobs and right-wing blowhards railing about the "rule of law" in connection with throat-boffing. Granted, as a fashion statement it's one thing, but as a "hurry-and-grow" thing it appears to be very disconcerting. The same things were said about hot-pants in my time. (Oh gawd, I just sounded like my Dad. 'Scuze me while I shoot myself.)

Who do you think had more to do with this trend, Ken Starr or Britney?
