Fantasy Football:pick your team (current players)

For me

Goalkeeper: Francesco Toldo
Right Back:Lillian Thuram
Centre back: Marcel Desailly
Centre back: Fabio Cannavaro
Left Back: Roberto Carlos
Right Midfield: David Beckham
Central midfield: Edgar Davids
Central Midfield: Zinedine Zidane
Left midfield: Luis Figo
Centre forward:Francesco Totti
Centre forward:Gabriel Batistuta

there are others who i can think of who would be equally at home in this list, Vierra, Rivaldo, Schevchenko, Nesta, Crespo, Buffon..........

almost impossible for me to do this because i'll be changing my mind every minute.

add raul to your list of 'subs'. not sure about Desailly and Toldo (not disputing they dont warrant to be in the team, but i'm sure there are better players in those positions).

also, interesting to see no German players and only the one Dutch player.

Yeah Raul is a player who i could add. ok Toldo, who is better than Toldo, Schmeical at his peak maybe, Gianluigi Buffon possibly although he is the Italian number two i do believe. Desailly is proven, the only players up to his standard are already in my back four, with the exception of Maldini, Lizarazu, Nesta, Torricelli and Jaap Stam. Dont you dare mention Sol Campbell, he is shit in comparison to Marcel.

i was not planning to mention judas. damn, i mentioned him.

actually i was thinking of Aylala (sp?) of Argentina. Also Nesta and Lizarazu are quality.

you're probably right on toldo.

Surely we are forgetting to put David James in goal?

Distracting hairstyles could be our secret weapon.

Is this a current fantasy football team only or ever? I ask only because you said 'Schmeical at his peak'. If we can put old people in then surely Bobby Moore, Dixie Dean, Maradonna, Pele, Klinsman, Baggio and others should get in there no?

very funny.

Dixie Dean is one of the greatest centre-forward ever to have played the game. Dean scored 473 goals (including 37 hat-tricks) during a career spanning 502 league, FA Cup, representative and international matches for Tranmere, Everton, Notts County and England (16 Caps, small number due to two world wars). At 21 years old with Everton, Dean scored 60 goals in one season, a record that still stands and is unlikely to ever be bettered.

clive allen came close. 49 goals in one season.

can you please breakdown your stats. what is 'representative'? are you including goals he scored at school?

also, please post his tally for EVERTON only - and that does not include international games.

ok the representive bit comes form the Football Leagues website. I dunno what the problem is btw, why the attitude? I mean Dean is recognised in footballing circles as a legend.

Everton stats.

1925-26 - 32 league goals in 38 games
1926-27 - 21 league goals in 27 games
1927-28 - 60 league goals in 39 games

When we were relagted two years later we won Divison 2, he scored 39 league goals in 37 games. The next season, after promotion we won Division 1 again, (1931-32) and Dean scored 45 league goals that season.

Happy?

edit: No one, and I mean no one, comes close to Dean's achievements mate, and as a football fan I no you won't deny it. And if we are doing an 'all time' type fantasy team/squad then Dean has to be in it.

chris says he scored 82 goals (including fa cup and england goals) in that one season.

now, if we minus the england goals - thats the tally I'm interested in.

(i read a report that suggested he scored over 100 that season including friendlys and the like)

by the way, no attitude. pj isnt about so i choose to try to wind you up.

anyway........we all know Jimmy Greaves is the greatest British foward of all time.

hah to the first bit. We all know that he will be jealous of such a record coz no one at Chelsea has one like it. And bollocks to the second point.

I think Gary Linekar came close too, it was his best season ever incidently when he did. Who was he playing for?

Can I just say that hijacking pj's thread and talking about how our teams (uj's and mine) are historically far superior to his is most enjoyable

I think best squad ever would be fairer, because as you say, its very difficult for us to compare Dean with someone like Pele, because we can watch Pele but we can't watch Dean and we have to go on the paper only. I will start a thread I think.

My current fantasy football team (also the team I use on Pro Evolution Soccer):

GK Buffon (ITA)
DF Gamarra (PAR)
DF Nesta (ITA)
DF Stam (NED)
MF Davids (NED)
MF Beckham* (ENG)
MF Rivaldo (BRA)
MF Figo (POR)
FW Roberto Carlos (BRA)
FW Batistuta (ARG)
FW Zola (ITA)

Subs
GK Barthez (FRA)
DF Desailly (FRA)
DF Cannavaro (ITA)
MF Okocha (NIG)
MF Veron (ARG)
MF Zidane (FRA)
MF Ruicosta (POR)
MF Totti (ITA)
FW Ronaldo (BRA)
FW Raul (SPA)
FW Ortega (ARG)

Roberto Carlos is up front because I consider him versatile enough to play up there, and the fact that I don't like him as a defender.

Blah.

nicwe to see someone pick Zola, one of the games forgotten great players. although the use of Carlos up front is a bit worrying. in fact i would say that the subs bench is almost as good than the starting eleven.

I rate Zola ridiculously highly ever since he scored that womper from a Le Saux corner in the FA cup second round against Norwich City. Le Saux whipped in what looked to be a horrible near post corner, when Zola came out of absolutely nowhere and backheeled it past the Canaries' keeper. God damn.

Plus he has incredible skill, and for such a small player can get a huge amount of power behind the ball, especially on free kicks (he'd be the second port of call for free kicks on my team, behind Beckham, obviously). I always compared him to Maradona, though comparing anybody to Maradona is a tall order.

Roberto Carlos up front? Well, I wanted a 3-4-3 formation, and there just wasn't room at the back for the man. Considering his pace and power I always thought he should have played as an offensive half or a striker - guess it's a good thing that I was never put in charge of the Brazil side, huh. Still... as far as Pro Evolution Soccer goes, he works well - 2nd highest goal scorer behind God himself (Gabriel Batistuta).

Anybody entered a team for the Sun or Telegraph fantasy football World Cup thing? We all entered a team each at college for the Sun's one, winner gets a bit of money. If I can remember the team, I'll post it, though it wasn't really much compared to my dream team.

Long post. Sorry.

Dino or Roberto?

It's it's Roberto Baggio you're talking about, he's sucked ever since he missed the penalty against Brazil in the '94 World Cup final. Trust the Americans to turn him into a shade of his former.. uh... form.

edit: urbanjunkie's Spurs team had me reaching for the crucifix. Please don't do that again, it's disgusting. :yell:
