I hope you'll all remember that I said: The United States should never have allowed ANY country to have developed nuclear armaments, even if it meant we had to bomb their reactors... or, god forbid, even had to have nuked them first.

I don't think you all realize how close the world is right now to nuclear conflagration.

I'm sorry to say that it's too late now, the jig is up, and the most horrible end is near.

Goatboy, I'm not sure if I understand you.

German Jewish scientists helped to develop the nuclear bomb, as did others. But they did it here, didn't they? And, therefore, at the very beginning, wasn't it ONLY the United States who had the nuclear bomb? And if the United States were an evil empire, at that time, if it wanted to, couldn't the United States have bombed every country in the world and no one could have stopped them?

So my point is this: If the United States had that kind of power, I believe history will write that it would have behooved the United States that it forever remained the sole entity to have such destructive power.

Bah, the USSR and others getting the bomb is the best thing for the world. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. We've already seen how damaging American foreign policy can be... imagine if there was no way at all to balance against us. I'm not arguing for nuclear proliferation, but I am arguing that unchecked power is bad. We would have been much bigger assholes if were were the only ones with the bomb.

GFY I think my point was that you go on about proliferation and capabilities, and your own government is providing money to an axis of evil country to build tecjhnology that is in direct contradiction to the stated policy. Capitalism in action I guess.

Yes, Philly, but my point was also WHY we now are providing them money (considering that they already have nuclear bombing capability and our wishing, perhaps, to have some control over their mishandling things--["keep your friends close, but your enemies closer"]), VERSUS.... the fact that we should have done to North Korea what Israel did to Iraq.

I'm arguing that the Cold War was a good thing because it kept us in check. The threat of Russian retaliation kept us from doing a lot of things - using nukes being among them. McArthur wanted very much to use nukes in Korea - Truman didn't let him, in part out of concern for the Russian response (admitttedly more because he didn't want to start a huge war with China). The threat of having nukes used against us kept us from using nukes on others. The Cold War, while creating thousands of nuclear weapons, also ensured that none of them got used. We didn't nuke anyone after 9/11 for two reasons - the fact that such a large-scale assault is sloppy and pretty goddamn permanent, and because the world won't tolerate a nuclear response (an intolerance spawned by the Cold War experience and significant because of the political and military teeth behind it).

Anyway, little known fact: the destructive power of the US conventional arsenal exceeds that of the nuclear arsenal. Who needs nukes that destroy a city when we have missiles that can be sent through a specific window?

Anyway, unchecked power leads to abuse, period. American power is no exception.
